storms through the door, followed closely by the police. The police take photographs of the bar, the damage and the rock, then they place the rock in a plastic bag, before carting it from the bar. They speak with some of the customers before announcing that they can go home.
Two officers take Candy aside, while another two do the same with me. They ask me questions, but there isn’t much I can tell them, considering I didn’t see or hear anything out of the ordinary until the rock came through the window. They take down some notes and then leave.
“Are you two all right?” Mitch asks Candy and me when everyone has left.
“I’m fine. Just a little shaken,” I tell him.
“Same,” Candy replies.
“Okay, well I’m going to make a call and see if we can’t get that window repaired tonight.”
“Call Thompson Windows and Glass, they do emergency repairs, twenty four hours,” Candy says.
“Thanks, darlin’.” He walks off into his office and I grab a broom and start sweeping. Candy grabs a wet cloth and begins wiping the tables down to rid them of glass shards and dust. It takes less than an hour to have the place clean again.
“Window people will be here within the hour. You two can go on home, now. Thanks, girls.”
“ Okay, Mitch. See you.”
“Oh, Lacey? ”
“Yeah?”
“Roam’s away, right?”
I nod. “He’ll be home in a couple of days.”
“Think it would be best if you go to the clubhouse for the night.”
I feel my shoulders slump. I knew as soon as I saw the writing on the rock that it was connected to the break in, but I just didn’t want to admit it. “Yeah. I will.”
“Good. I’ll walk y’all out.”
I grab my handbag and Mitch walks Candy and me to our cars, which are parked side by side.
The drive to the clubhouse is short. I call Jenn on the way and she offers to meet me there.
The clubhouse is quiet when I arrive. Jenn’s car isn’t in the yard yet, but I know she shouldn’t be too far away.
“Hey,” I say to the Prospect, Louie, who comes over to meet me.
“Lacey,” he gives a small smile. “Come on inside. Roam wants me to ring him as soon as you’re settled.”
“Sure. Thanks, Louie. Oh, Jenn is on her way as well.”
“Already spoke to Switch.”
“Oh. Okay then.” He walks me inside and into Roam’s room. On the bed, there is a bag of my clothing.
“Roam asked me to get you some stuff. I didn’t know what you’d want so I grabbed a bit of everything,” he says, pointing to the bag.
Well, I’m not sure how I feel about that…
Louie leaves and I pick through the bag. Sweet Jesus he went through my underwear drawer. I feel my face heat, knowing that he probably came across my vibrator.
“Hey, you okay?” Jenn comes rushing through the door and crash tackles me onto the bed.
“I’m fine! Gosh, woman, are you trying to suffocate me?” I laugh, shoving her off me.
“Sorry, Lace,” she says, looking anything but sorry. “This is scaring me. Who do you think is behind it?”
“I don’t know,” I shrug. “Roam thinks it’s my ex, but I’m not so sure. He hasn’t really got enough brain cells to pull any of this shit off.”
Jenn bites down on her lip, looking worried. “Just be safe, okay.”
“I will. I think I’m going to tell Mitch that I’ll keep my distance until whoever is behind this is caught. I hate that his property keeps getting damaged because of me.”
“Any other time I would tell you to ignore them and keep doing what you’re doing, but I think I have to agree with you. This is scary shit and whoever’s behind it clearly doesn’t have any regard for the safety of anyone else who’s in the vicinity when they execute their attacks on you. It’s just lucky no one has been seriously injured so far.”
“I know. I feel horrible about it all. What if a piece of glass hit someone in the eye today, or something? I
