Tatum!â Fiona appeared on the verge of a tantrum.
The nanny intervened smoothly. âWhy donât you get ready, and then Iâll read to you.â
âYouâre off duty,â Alec pointed out.
âI donât mind.â Tatum gave him a wistful smile. âI havenât had anyone to talk to all day except salesclerks. Iâd enjoy the company.â Taking the little girlâs hand, she grabbed the bags with the other and off they went.
He remembered what Patty had said about swapping bedrooms. Well, tomorrow was soon enough. âIâll join you in a few minutes.â
âOkay, Daddy,â Fiona called back.
Darlene sat on a padded chair and rubbed her ankle. âThat was fun, but exhausting.â
âYou want me to walk you to your place?â Heâd never worried about his motherâs safety on the stairs or the elevator, until heâd seen the place through Pattyâs eyes.
âI want you to explain why you had a police officer in a tuxedo giving you tips on securityâor was that an excuse for inviting her over?â
âShe isnât a police officer anymore. Sheâs a private detective.â Alec saw no point in beating around the bush. âI was hoping to hire her but I scared her off.â
âYou did, or me?â Darlene asked.
âMe. She was about to leave when you got here.â He clamped his jaw shut, unwilling to explain further.
Darlene didnât pry. âI used to consider her a questionable influence, but I liked her, all the same. And compared to Sabrina, sheâs an angel. Private detective, huh?â
âI know you donât like the idea of a guardâ¦.â
âSheâs perfect. Hire her, at least for the birthday party.â His mother flexed the ankle and winced. âIt would be just like Sabrina to show up and make a scene.â
He should have mentioned the upcoming party to Patty. âI suspect I didnât make things sound urgent enough. If she realized there could be a threat next weekendâ¦â
âWhat kind of threat?â
He hadnât heard Tatum come in. Now the nanny stood regarding him with a pronounced pucker between her eyebrows. The sound of running water from the bathroom indicated Fionaâs whereabouts.
âMy ex-wife demanded an unsupervised visit with our daughter, and when I refused, she threatened to take her to Argentina.â Much as he hated to alarm the nanny, she had a right to know the whole story. âIâm looking into hiring a security guard.â
Tatum stared at him in alarm. âDo you know anything about that man sheâs dating?â
âI believe his family owns a manufacturing company.â All the same, he supposed he ought to research Eduardo Patron, since the man might someday become Fionaâs stepfather.
The nannyâs chest rose and fell rapidly, as if she were on the verge of hyperventilating. âI didnât sign up to get in the middle of a kidnapping.â
âPlease donât make too much of this. Itâs probably an idle threat,â Alec assured her.
âBesides, heâs hiring a former policewoman to protect Fiona,â Darlene interjected, ignoring the fact that Patty had turned down the job. âI know her personally. Sheâll be great.â
Tatum glanced toward the hallway. The water had stopped running. âIf you say so.â She headed back to her charge.
âIâm afraid it wonât take much to send that girl scurrying home to Boston,â Darlene murmured.
Alec feared the same thing. Losing Tatum would be more than a mere inconvenience. Continuity of care was important to a child.
He had to change Pattyâs mind. He had logic on his side, since sheâd already surveyed the premises and sketched the layout. Surely she wouldnât want to waste all that work.
He decided to make her a proposition: guard duty for a few days, and putting together a
