finally found someone different.
But instead heâd gone on to break her heart. Heâd asked her to marry him just before sheâd had her scare, two years before. And then heâd ended it the day sheâd got the results. Heâd admitted that he couldnât cope with the prospect of her having cancer again, but he hadnât wanted to be the bad guy whoâd dumped the cancer patient. Instead, heâd waited until they knew she was clearâand then heâd dumped her.
Just as well they hadnât actually chosen the engagement ring.
Sammy had walked away with her head held high and her heart feeling as if it had been ground into sand. And sheâd promised herself sheâd never make the mistake of getting that close to anyone again. Yet, right now, she was taking a huge risk. This would be her third date with Nickâand she didnât have an exit strategy in place.
She dragged in a breath. Nickâs nephew had been diagnosed with osteosarcoma, so maybe Nick would understand more than the average person.
But what if he didnât?
What if it made him back away? What if she repulsed him?
Even Brynâwhoâd been engaged to herâhadnât coped with her scars. Not really. Theyâd always made love with the lights off, and heâd been careful never to look at her leg or touch it. Sheâd pretended that it didnât matter...but it had.
And it mattered now.
She really wasnât ready to tell Nick about her past yet.
She didnât want to call off their date, either; given that sheâd already told him how much she liked going out for afternoon tea, she knew he wouldnât believe a feeble excuse. And, being a lawyer, of course heâd ask questions.
Probing ones.
Ones where even a silent reaction would help him to see the truth.

Sammy still hadnât worked out how to deal with the situation by the time she met up with her best friends for a long-planned evening with pizza at her flat.
Except Ashleigh and Claire had known her for long enough to guess that something was wrong.
âSpit it out,â Claire said.
âWhat?â Sammy asked, feigning innocence.
âYouâre very quiet. Which isnât you, unless youâre concentrating on a shoot. So talk to us,â Ashleigh said. âThatâs what best friends are for. To listen, to tell you when youâre being an idiot, and to give you a hug when you need one.â
Sammy actually felt tears pricking her eyes at Ashleighâs words, and was cross with herself for it. For pityâs sake. She wasnât one of those people who bawled their eyes out at the drop of a hat.
âDid you find another lump?â Claire asked softly.
âNo. Why does everyone
always
assume itâs the cancer come back, if somethingâs bothering me?â Sammy asked, losing her cool.
Ashleigh and Claire immediately put down their cutlery, stood up and enveloped her in a hug.
âWeâre not assuming anything,â Ashleigh said, stroking her hair. âBut weâve known you for years, we can see youâre upset, and we want to be here for you.â
âItâs just something stupid.â Sammy swallowed hard to keep the tears back. She wasnât weak. She was independent and strong. She could do this.
âThen itâs something we can help you withâand make you laugh about,â Claire pointed out. âDonât push us away. Thereâs a fine line between being independent and being too stubborn, you know.â
She and Ashleigh returned to their chairs, but each of them kept hold of one of Sammyâs hands.
âI donât know what to wear on a date,â Sammy muttered.
âOK,â Ashleigh said carefully. âWhere are you going, and is it a first date?â
âAfternoon tea at a posh hotel.â Sammy knew this was something she should have told them about before. Because they were her best friends
