tugged her out the door. âCome with me. If Aaronâs not back in the dorm when weget there, you may have to stay and watch the little kids for a few minutes while James and I go looking for the bigger ones.â
âAaronâs a good boy,â Inez insisted. âI know his family. Heâll look after your sister fine.â
âI donât doubt that for a minute,â Megan said. âBut itâs dark out there, Roxyâs got him all to herself and theyâre probably riding double on that all-terrain thingie. Iâm not worried about her safety. Iâm worried about whoâs going to protect him. â
They hit the dorm porch just as James was coming out the door.
He scowled at Megan. âYou didnât flash the light.â
âThatâs because everything isnât fine,â she replied. âI brought Inez along to watch the boys while weâre gone.â
âWhere are we going?â
âHunting. Grab a flashlight and come on. Roxy and Aaron are out in the woods on your ATV, all by their lonesomes. I donât think thatâs very wise, do you?â
âNo.â James matched her strides off the porch and across the dirt road. âHow did it happen?â
âAll I know is, they were gone when I got back to the kitchen. Inez said they went for a ride.â
âMaybe thatâs all there is to it?â
Megan shot him a look of doubt that was evident even in the sparse light filtering through the trees from the rising moon. âAre we talking about the same two kids we know and love? Get real, Harris.â
Â
James had to call Aaronâs name twice before there was an answering shout. He pointed his flashlight in that general direction and saw the pair coming toward him. In seconds theyâd become a foursome.
Roxy was hanging on to Aaronâs arm as if sheâd laid claim and was defending her personal property. âWe ran out of gas,â the girl said with a telling giggle.
James was furious. âWhat were you doing out there in the first place?â
âTaking Roxy home, just like you told me to,â the young man answered. âMiss Megan wasnât in the dining room when we left. Inez said she was with you.â
âThatâs beside the point,â James countered.
Aaron shrugged. âWhat was I supposed to do? I was just following your orders.â
âAnd I wanted to go home,â Roxy crooned. âAaron and I werenât doing anything wrong. Honest.â
The beam of Jamesâs flashlight illuminated the college studentâs flushed face, making him blink and shade his eyes. Bright pink smudges marked his cheeks and mouth.
âIf you were behaving yourself, then you put your lipstick on crooked,â James chided. âOr is there some other excuse for that stuff smeared all over you?â
Aaron began to rub his lips with the back of his hand while Roxanne laughed lightly. âI was just thanking him for being so nice.â
âWell, from now on, he wonât be available to escort you anywhere,â James told her. âIf you want to go home early, too bad. Youâll have to wait till Iâm free to take you.â
The teenager whined, âThatâs so not fair.â
âI think Mr. Harris is being very fair,â Megan countered. âHe could have ordered us both out of camp and ended my project. And heâd have had perfect grounds for taking that action, thanks to you. I canât believe you didnât consider those consequences.â
âWhat do I care about you and your old project?â the angry girl shot back. âYou never cared about me. You wouldnât have even brought me along if Mom hadnât made you. Why shouldnât I kiss Aaron? At least he thinks about my feelings.â
âThatâs enough,â James said. âThis discussion is over. Aaron, you go back to the dorm and relieve Inez so she can go
