like that.â She withdrew her hand. âI like risk.â She ran her tongue along her upper lip.
The waitress brought a plate of nachos. Melody looked at it and gave a little twitch of her nose.
â Way too much cheese,â she said, and ate some anyway. âTell me something?â She wiped a crumb from her mouth. âWhat do you see in Tasso? I know heâs rich, but you donât seem the sort of person who likes rich for richâs sake.â
âWeâve been friends for years.â
âThat doesnât answer the question. I donât think I like him. Iâm curious why you do.â
âTasso has his flaws.â
âSuch as the way he views women.â
The waitress came to take our order. âTwo more again, thanks.â We looked at each other as the waitress lowered the flag and took our empty glasses.
âWhat do you mean by that?â
âWeâre just vaginas on legs to him.â
âI wouldnât say that. He likes women.â
âDoes he? He likes vaginas.â
âOf course he likes women. Heâs just not interested in relationships.â
âWhich was my point, I think.â
âI suppose you could call his attitude to women a flaw. Perhaps his main flaw. But he has strengths.â
âSuch as?â
âHeâs loyal. Tasso always looks out for his friends. He might scold them and yell at them. He might make fun of them. But in the end heâll always look out for them.â
âAnd thatâs what you like about him?â
âI like that heâs loyal to his friends. Heâs also smart, funny, generous.â
âSo youâre prepared to overlook the way he treats women.â
âI donât overlook it. But the women he takes to bed are over eighteen. Just. Presumably they can make decisions for themselves. He doesnât hit them, heâs always charming, he gives them money and jewellery and apartments. As far as Iâm concerned, they can decide for themselves if itâs worth it.â
âUh huh.â
âIs that not correct?â
âThey might not always have a choice.â
âI donât know what you mean.â
âForget it, then.â
âOkay, Iâll forget it.â
âWhat shall we do now?â
âWhat would you like to do?â
She looked straight into my eyes. âDrink another couple and then dodge the breathalysers back to your place.â
âUh huh.â
âHave I shocked you?â
âNo. What I mean is, yes. Am I just a dick on legs to you?â
âOf course not.â
âYouâre kind of blunt.â
âLife is short. Why waste it being reserved? I like you, you like me. Whatâs to stop us having a fun evening?â
âHarlin?â
âOnly if he finds out.â
The waitress came with the drinks. I wasnât sure I was in the mood for frozen margaritas anymore. We sat for a while in silence, drinking our drinks and nibbling our food.
âI canât do it,â I said.
She looked like she didnât care much. âWhy not? Is there someone else?â
I thought for a moment, wondering how much I should say. âThere was someone.â
âWas?â
âWas. But Iâm not sure I can be with someone else. Not yet. Not someone like you.â I couldnât take my eyes off her exquisite lips.
âWhat do you mean, someone like me?â
âI donât know.â I heard the chatter and clatter of the restaurant for the first time in a long time. âAnyway, itâs too risky for you.â
âAs I say, lifeâs short. Sometimes youâve got to take a risk. I thought you were a risk-taker.â
âYouâre mad at me.â
âI donât think Iâm mad at you. Maybe we have misunderstood each other.â
âMaybe. I want to see you again.â
âWhy?â
âTo clear up the
