anything about it. Theyâre all big buddies. You donât know how it is here.â
Reacher said nothing.
âHeâs coming home,â she said. âCan you imagine what heâs going to do to me?â
He said nothing.
âIâm trapped, Reacher. Iâm boxed in, because of Ellie. Do you see that?â
He said nothing.
âWhy wonât you help me? Is it the money? Is it because I canât pay you?â
He said nothing.
âIâm desperate,â she said. âYouâre my only chance. Iâm begging you. Why wonât you do it? Is it because Iâm Mexican?â
He said nothing.
âItâs because Iâm just a greaseball, right? A beaner? Youâd do it for a white woman? Like your girlfriend? I bet sheâs a white woman. Probably a blonde, right?â
âYes, sheâs a blonde,â he said.
âSome guy was beating up on her, youâd kill him.â
Yes, I would, he thought.
âAnd she ran off to Europe without you. Didnât want you to go with her. But youâd do it for her, and you wonât do it for me.â
âItâs not the same,â he said for the third time.
âI know,â she said. âBecause Iâm just beaner trash. Iâm not worth it.â
He said nothing.
âWhatâs her name?â she asked. âYour girlfriend?â
âJodie,â he said.
âO.K., imagine Jodie over there in Europe. Sheâs trapped in some bad situation, getting beat up every day by some maniac sadist. She tells you all about it. Bares her soul. Every horrible humiliating detail. What are you going to do?â
Kill him, he thought.
She nodded like she could read his mind. âBut you wonât do that for me. Youâd do it for the gringa, but not for me.â
He paused a beat with his mouth halfway open. It was true. He would do it for Jodie Garber, but he wouldnât do it for Carmen Greer. Why not? Because it comes in a rush. You canât force it. Itâs a hot-blooded thing, like a drug in your veins, and you go with it. If itâs not there, you canât go with it. Simple as that. Heâd gone with it before in his life, many times. People mess with him, they get what they get. They mess with Jodie, thatâs the same thing as messing with him. Because Jodie was him. Or at least she used to be. In a way that Carmen wasnât. And never would be. So it just wasnât there .
âItâs not about gringas or latinas,â he said quietly.
She said nothing.
âPlease, Carmen,â he said. âYou need to understand that.â
âSo what is it about?â
âItâs about I know her and I donât know you.â
âAnd that makes a difference?â
âOf course it does.â
âThen get to know me,â she said. âWeâve got two days. Youâre about to meet my daughter. Get to know us.â
He said nothing. She drove on. Pecos 55 miles.
âYou were a policeman,â she said. âYou should want to help people. Or are you scared? Is that it? Are you a coward?â
He said nothing.
âYou could do it,â she said. âYouâve done it before. So you know how. You could do it and get clean away. You could dump his body where nobody would find it. Out in the desert. Nobody would ever know. It wouldnât come back on you, if you were careful. Youâd never get caught. Youâre smart enough.â
He said nothing.
âAre you smart enough? Do you know how? Do you?â
âOf course I know how,â he said. âBut I wonât do it.â
âWhy not?â
âI told you why not. Because Iâm not an assassin.â
âBut Iâm desperate,â she said. âI need you to do this. Iâm begging you. Iâll do anything if youâll help me.â
He said nothing.
âWhat do you want, Reacher? You want sex? We could do
