to get the CIA to accept you? They were not impressed by the fiasco you created at your last job.â
Caitlyn glanced at Carlos. Heâd paused outside the door, his head cocked in a way that made it obvious he was listening. Damn him. Though sheprobably deserved it for eavesdropping on him last night. âI wouldnât call it a fiasco.â
âIt got you fired,â Sean argued.
âIt saved a womanâs life.â She noticed Carlos had stopped pretending not to listen. He was now leaning against the door, studying her with his gleaming amber eyes.
âIt caused a scandal,â Sean said. âI had to call in some major markers to get you a job working for me.â
âI appreciate your efforts, but I decided to work here.â
âThatâs ridiculous.â Sean gave Shanna an angry look. âThis is your fault, isnât it?â
Shanna frowned. âI invited her to Tinoâs party last night and explained the situation to her.â
âYou mean you brainwashed her,â Sean growled. âYou were always the one to cause problems.â
âShe did nothing wrong.â Caitlyn jumped to her sisterâs defense. She had a terrible feeling there were secrets she still didnât know about. âI could see with my own eyes that the vampires, mortals, and shape shifters here have combined to make one loving, supportive family. And Iâm happy to be a part of it.â
âI will not allow it,â Sean growled. âYou will not live with these monsters!â
âIâm not a monster!â Tino yelled.
Caitlyn gasped when she saw the little boy had levitated so he could see over the closed bottom half of the door. âDad!â she shouted, drawing his attention to her before he could turn. âMy mind is made up.â She noted with relief that Shanna was hurrying into the nursery to grab Tino.
âCait, youâre not thinking clearly,â Sean said, facing her. âWho would you trust the mostâvampires or the government?â
She tilted her head. âThatâs a tough one.â
Carlos chuckled.
Sean spun toward him. âWhat the hell are you doing, listening in on us?â
Carlos smiled. âGood night, sir.â He glanced at Caitlyn and switched to Portuguese. âBrava, menina . Youâre a brave and fearless fighter.â
Her heart swelled at the compliment. âThank you.â
âWhat did he say?â Sean demanded as Carlos slipped inside the MacKay office.
âNothing,â she mumbled. She noted with relief that Shanna was now holding Constantine. The little boyâs secret was safe.
âIâm not letting this go,â Sean warned her. âIâll talk to MacKay myself and get him to release you.â
âYou will let it go.â Caitlyn lifted her chin. âOr Iâll ask Mom why Shanna never received any of the letters I wrote to her.â
Seanâs face paled. âIâ¦donât know what youâre talking about.â
âAfter Shanna left home, I wrote letters to her, lots of letters, and Mom gave them to you so you could mail them from your office.â
Sean shrugged. âThey must have gotten lost. Or maybe we had the wrong address.â
âOr maybe you never mailed them,â Caitlyn said quietly.
Shanna shook her head sadly. âCait, let it go.â
âRight,â Sean agreed. âIt was a long time ago. Water under the bridge.â
âIt was a bridge I never got to cross,â Caitlyn snapped. âI needed my sister. I felt all alone and abandoned. And Shanna felt abandoned, too.â
Sean crossed his arms, scowling at her. âYou have no reason to complain. You were well provided for, both of you. You always had everything you needed.â
âExcept each other,â Caitlyn muttered.
Seanâs mouth thinned. âI thought it was for the best.â
Caitlyn planted her hands on her hips.
