forcefully. âIt was an accident.â Caitlyn set her gun on the counter. âI was aiming for his chest.â âYou blew his pecker into Connecticut,â Phineas muttered. She grinned. âI think you have issues, Phineas. It was only a paper pecker.â âThe worst kind,â Carlos added. She laughed, and his heart stopped. She sounded like music and tinkling wind chimes and the trill of birdsong all in one. Making her laugh made him feel like he could conquer mountains. âWould you like to practice some more?â he asked. âI think I should stop while Iâm ahead.â She ejected the cartridge from her automatic. âMy ears are ringing.â Carlos removed his cell phone from his pantsâ pocket. Maybe enough time had passed and her father was gone. âIâll see if itâs okay for you to go upstairs.â âWhy wouldnât it be okay?â she asked. He hesitated. âYour sister and the children are in the nursery.â âOh, Iâd love to see them.â Caitlyn slipped her shoes back on and reached for her suit jacket. âAnd your fatherâs there,â Carlos added. She paused with her jacket half on. âOh.â âHe brought a present to Tino,â Carlos continued. âAngus and Emma sent me down here to warn you. They figured you wouldnât want to see him right now.â âOh, man.â Phineas shook his head. âYour dadâsgonna be pissed when he finds out youâre working for MacKay.â âHe has to find out sooner or later.â Caitlyn finished putting on her jacket. âI might as well get this over with.â âAre you sure?â Carlos asked. She took a deep breath. âYes. I made my decision, and Iâll stand behind it.â Her eyes hardened with a glint of anger. âBesides, I have a few questions for my father.â
Chapter Eight C aitlyn exited the elevator and strode across the foyer. Just as she entered the hallway, she spotted her father leaving the nursery. His head turned at the sound of her heels on the marble floor. His eyes widened. She steeled her nerves for his reaction. âCaitlyn,â he demanded, âwhat are you doing here?â She continued to walk calmly toward him. âI work here.â He flinched, then his face turned red. âThe hell you do. Is this some kind of sick joke?â Shanna peered out the open top half of the nursery door and gave Caitlyn a worried look. âThereâs no reason for anyone to get upset. Iâm sure we can discuss this in a rational manner.â âItâs really quite simple,â Caitlyn added. âIâveaccepted a job with MacKay Security and Investigation.â âNo!â Seanâs face grew a darker red and his hands fisted. âIâve lost one daughter to this foul place. I refuse to lose another!â âThereâs nothing wrong with this place.â Caitlyn stopped across the hall from the nursery. âItâs infested with vermin,â Sean hissed. âFoul creatures of theââ âEnough!â Shanna stepped into the hall, closing the nursery door behind her. She lowered her voice. âDonât talk like that in front of my children.â Sean ground his teeth as he visibly fought for control. âThis is a nightmare.â His head snapped to the side and he glared. âGet lost. This is a private conversation.â Caitlyn whirled around and found Carlos walking toward them. Damn. He didnât follow instructions well. Sheâd told him and Phineas that she wanted to handle this alone. âDonât mind me,â Carlos muttered as he strolled by. âJust passing through. I have a meeting to attend.â Sean waited till Carlos swiped his ID card by the MacKay security office, then he stepped closer to Caitlyn. âI canât believe you did this to me. Do you know how hard it was
