you.â
âOkay, letâs notââ
âOh manâ¦â
âIs this weird?â
âA little!â Paoloâs eyes bug out for a second like a cartoon.
âWeirder than me doing your mom?â
âUh, yeah. Itâs my sister!â
âOkay, well, your logic system is different than mine, but in any case, Iâm sorry. To be completely honest, I donât even remember it happening.â
Which, I have to say, is quickly becoming one of the great tragedies of my life. Iâm harboring all the guilt and shame of being a cheater without any of the awesome memories of the sex itself.
âYou donât even remember? Wait. I was with you the whole time Veronica was here, then my mom drove you home.â
âWhat? No, man. I woke up in
your house
this morning.â
âThis house?â
âYeah.â
âShame on you, dude!â
âIâm sorry!â
âSo you came back?â
âI donât remember getting in your momâs car in the first place.â Do I? Thereâs a fuzzy memory trying to make itself known in my brain.
âLook, all I know is I said good night to you and my mom and went to sleep as you guys were heading out the front door. Right after you made those prank calls.â
âPrank calls?â
âYou gotta remember that! You called almost every pizza place in town, said you were a state official and that pizza was being banned? Enzo was really upset.â
âEnzo of Enzoâs Pizza?â
âYeah, dude. It was amazing.â Paolo takes out a pack of clove cigarettes, pops one in his mouth, and lights it up right there in the kitchen. Itâs a little startling, as itâs a new habit.
âYouâre allowed to smoke in the house?â
âI guess so,â he says, and Iâm suddenly impressed that, considering how much his mom spoils him, Paolo didnât grow up to be more of a dick. âJust like you were allowed to stay here so you could bang my sister.â
âPaolo, Iâm sorry, really.â
âAnd
then
you banged Taryn today! Itâs like, thatâs not right, you know?â He gestures frenetically with his clove. âMessing around with my sisterâs heart.â
âShe seems to be doing fine, Pow. She doesnât even wanna look at me.â
âYeah, âcause her heartâs been messed with!â
âBut sheâs got some boyfriend, so who cares? I mean, what about my heart, you know? Which, may I add, wonât be beating for much longer?â
Paolo exhales a stream of sweet-smelling clove smoke. âItâs okay, D. Iâm just joking around.â
But Iâm not sure if he is, and frankly, I donât think he knows either.
âI donât mean to get all worked up about this,â Paolo says. âMaybe itâs just because Veronicaâs always had a crush on you for, like, forever.â
âReally?â Whoa. My heartbeat quickens.
âNah, of course not really.â
âOh.â
âI always thought she genuinely hated you, actually. Thatâs why this is so shocking. You want one of these?â
âNo thanks. Trying to stay substance-free for my last hours so I can die in a clear-minded state.â Also, cloves give me a headache.
âI hear ya. Definitely not the way Iâm gonna do it, though. I have the total opposite philosophy.â He drops his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. âI might try to OD, bro.â
âI hope youâre kidding.â
Paolo raises his eyebrows and shrugs while inhaling his clove. The multitasking throws him off, and he has a coughing fit.
âAnyone dying in there?â Paoloâs mom shouts from the hall.
âNope, all good,â I say.
Paolo takes a sip of my water. âHey,â he says. âAre you supersure you wanna remain substance-free?â
âYeah, no clove for me.â
âIâm not talking
