snorted, taking it in the serious but nonthreatening way Iâd intended him to. âSo you say. You might have trouble proving it. Anyway. Youâre in charge of getting Paquin ready for the reception tonightâyou know what kind of clothes and whatnot women are expected to wear at such things?â
âI can handle it, sir.â
âGood. Donât stint, eitherâthereâs no point in playing a game like this halfway. Well, go onâget out before Aikman gets here.â
âYes, sir,â I nodded. âThank you.â
I passed Aikman on my way down the corridor. From even that brief touch of his sense I was glad I hadnât stayed around.
Kutzko was just where Iâd expected to find him: loitering around the exit-corridor storage closets, where he was within easy reach of both the gatelock and the slightly more extensive storage areas where our duty cargo was stored. âAll hail the conquering hero,â he greeted me. âHowâd Mr. Kelsey-Ramos like it?â
âWhat, our report on the meeting?â I shrugged. âHe wasnât as attentive as Lord Kelsey-Ramos would have been, but then heâs new to this. He seemed impressed enough.â
âIâd say so, yes,â was his dry rejoinder. âConsidering the order just came through that sheâd be coming to the reception tonight.â He grinned with a mock-evil-tinged dreaminess. âCan you imagine what the assembled dignitaries would say if they knew they were hosting a zombi?â
I could, and it made me wince. âMikha, I need a favor.â
âSure. What?â
I hesitated. âI need a complete listing of capital crimes under Solitaire law.â
His eyebrows raised a couple of millimeters. âYou looking to start a new hobby?â
âItâs for a friend,â I told him, matching his dry tone. âI also need to know if there are any places in the systemâthe ring mines for instanceâwhere Patri law might possibly take precedence.â
âSolitaire law covers the entire system.â He shook his head, eyes boring into mine. âThis unnamed friend wouldnât by any chance be our outzombi, would it?â
I hadnât really expected to fool him. âIt would, yes,â I admitted. âIâm trying to get her a new hearing back on Outbound.â
Understanding came into his face. âAnd having the hearing take place after sheâs dead kind of defeats the purpose?â
I nodded. âUnfortunately, in order to keep her alive I have to find a replacement for her.â
Kutzkoâs eyes defocused a bit. âSo you want a list of capital crimes to see who we could stick with that honor. And you want the ring mines because thatâs where weâll be leaving the system from?â
âMore or less.â For the moment, there seemed no reason to mention how limited the pool of potential zombi candidates actually was. âCan you do that?â
âNo problem,â he assured me. âNow: whatâs the other favor you want?â
âWhat makes you think there is one?â I countered.
He smiled slyly. âOh, come on, Gilead. The blazing Solitaran penal code you could find on your own.â
I sighed. âSometimes I wish youâd been born stupid,â I told him. âOkay. At the moment weâre scheduled to leave tomorrow, which means the reception tonight will probably be my only chance to talk directly to Governor Rybakov. And I have to talk to herâprivately or reasonably so.â
Again, that knowing look. âAnd you want me ready to run interference?â
âBasically, yes.â
He paused, considering, and I could see that he was weighing the risks of possibly winding up square in the middle of this whole mess. âYou really think sheâs innocent?â he asked at last.
I nodded. âI do. The more I see of her, the less I think she could be a
