platters of appetizers on the table, then said, “The last part I read was the sex scene at the river.”
“Under the canopy of stars?” George took a dry rib. “Wasn’t that incredible? Can you imagine sex outside, under the stars?”
    Yeah. It’d be like fireworks.
Kim took an edamame pod, though she didn’t have much appetite.
“George, George,” Marielle chided. “You haven’t done that? Woody’s slipping.”
“No, he’s not,” George returned, a satisfied gleam in her eye. “But it’s a good idea. Where, though? We don’t want to get arrested.”
“Spanish Banks, Queen Elizabeth Park, Second Beach,” Marielle said promptly. “There are loads of places.” She glanced around. “Kim, Lily, do you have any suggestions?”
Lily shook her head. So did Kim, not about to suggest the hood of a truck in a parking lot.
“I loved how the passion overcame them,” George said. “Woody and I’ve had times like that, where you’re so hot for each other you lose your minds.”
    Lose your mind. Exactly.
“But they barely know each other and she’s not even sure if she likes him,” Lily objected. “Can a woman really get so carried away that she has sex in those circumstances?”
    Yes.
Kim swallowed. Though, actually, she had kind of liked Ty.
“Yes,” George said with a private smile.
Marielle nodded vigorously. “Sex is a great way of getting to know someone.”
“Look,” the blond doctor said, “you know I think consensual, safe sex is healthy. But a woman needs to look after herself. It can be dangerous, having sex with someone you don’t know.”
Kim, who’d been halfheartedly squeezing edamame beans out of the pod and munching them one by one, almost choked on a bean.
“Says the woman who’s only had sex with one man for . . . How many years has it been?” Marielle asked Lily.
    Lily’s jaw tightened. “Fifteen.”
The doctor rarely said much about her personal life, beyond that she was married and didn’t have kids. Still, Kim had picked up on an occasional hint that Lily wasn’t thrilled about her marriage. She was curious, but didn’t want to pry.
“Man, that’s forever.” Marielle shook her head, her wavy dark hair tossing. “Sounds awful to me.”
“Sounds great to me,” George said. “If you’re with the right man, why would you want someone else? Right, Lily?”
“Right.” She sounded less than ecstatic.
“Well,” Marielle said cheerfully, “you know me. There’s no one man, job, or drink that’s going to keep me happy for the rest of my life. As for being safe, I happen to be a great judge of character.” She turned to Kim. “You’re being quiet. What do you think?”
“That the ideal is what George says,” she answered slowly. “It is for me, anyhow.”
“Yeah, but you thought you had that with your boyfriend,” Marielle said, “and found out you were wrong. So now, why not have some fun? Like you seemed to be having with Ty.”
Only the most fun she’d ever had. Maybe Marielle was right, and it wasn’t such a bad thing to have some harmless fun. Thoughtfully, Kim sipped her boring cranberry drink. Maybe she wasn’t a total slut.
“There’s a difference between dancing and having sex,” Lily said.

Nine
    K im swallowed.
Right.
That was the bottom line for her too. Slowly she said, “Yes. Dancing, socializing, that’s great. But sex . . . It should be special.” Sex under the stars, sex in a cowboy hat, that had been pretty special. She frowned. “I mean, uh, emotional. Intimate. With someone you know and care about, where you think maybe there’s a future for the two of you.”
Marielle, who’d been lifting a forkful of tuna tataki toward her mouth, paused. “Why?” she asked bluntly.
    “I guess . . . because otherwise you’re wasting your time.”
“Having fun isn’t a waste of time,” the other woman said. “You go drinking with friends. Isn’t that as much a waste of time as having sex with a hot
