happened last night,â Jonathan said. âCan you talk?â
âYeah. Iâm hiding in the poetry section. Itâs totally empty. So what happened?â
âI canât really get into it right now, not over the phone.â
âThen calling me about it seems kind of pointless,â David said, humored.
âItâs not about that. Well, it is, but not exactly. We need to talk. Can I come by your place when you get off work?â
âCanât,â David said. âIâm on stud duty. The woman and I are seeing a movie.â
âKirsty?â Jonathan asked.
âSheâs the only one for now.â
âDavid, we have to talk before you guys go out.â
âI already know the facts of life, Jonny Boy,but thanks for offering.â
âDavid, Iâm serious. Damn serious.â
There was a long silence. Jonathan thought David had hung up on him, but a deep breath, like a sigh scratched through the speaker at his ear.
âHey? You there?â Jonathan asked.
âYeah, Iâm here,â David said. âLook, I figured something like this would happen.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âTAJ, man,â David said, as if it was obvious. âTotal ass-faced jealousy. You figure that now that Kirsty and I are together, youâre going to get frozen out. Like we wonât hang anymore or something. Itâs totally not like that. I mean, we canât be kids forâ¦â
âOx was murdered last night,â Jonathan said to shut his friend up. âOkay? I saw it. He and Cade dragged me down to the lake. They decided to memorialize Toby by throwing me in. Thenâ¦â He didnât know how much he could say without sounding completely nuts, but he had to convince David. âThese things came out of the woods. I couldnât see them real well. They just showed up. They chased Cade off, but they killed Ox. They left his body in the bushes by the lake.â
âNo way,â David said. âYou saw it?â
âYeah,â Jonathan said. He struggled against the memory of Ox being engulfed and yanked into the air by a black sheet. âI saw it.â
âDid you call the cops?â
âI couldnât. I donât know how to explain it to them. Itâs all really screwed up.â
âYou said âthingsâ came out of the woods?â
âI canât explain it,â Jonathan repeated. âNot over the phone.â
âSo, what does this have to do with Kirsty?â
âItâs just a feeling Iâve got. It all started happening this year, after she started school.â
âYou donât even know her,â David said, suddenly on the defensive.
âI know. But sheâs like always there. She saw what these guys were doing. I canât think of anyone else,â Jonathan said. Unless itâs you .
âApparently Special K isnât just for breakfast anymore.â
âIâm not high, David.â
âYou have to be. Think about it, Jonathan. A girl you donât even know is going around and killing people because they pick on you? Does that sound balanced? Does that sound even remotelytwo plus two? I meanâ¦Jesusâ¦itâs not like sheâs dating you !â
âDavid, listenâ¦â
âI canât believe youâre being such a dick about this. Look, man, itâs not my fault you donât have other friends. Okay? It sucks, but it isnât my fault. Kirsty and I are having a good time, and you feel left out. Well, tough. I canât believe youâd make up this kind of crap just to get in the middle of it.â
âIâm not making anything up.â
âThen youâre nuts. Youâre paranoid and deluded, and you need to get yourself some meds. And Jonathan, donât you dare try to implicate Kirsty in any of your paranoid crap. Okay? Iâm warning you. Just keep your mouth shut, or
