forget about him. Not only was he going to be my stepbrother, but I’d have to deal with women hitting on him constantly. I just couldn’t do it.

Chapter Eighteen

    Luke

The way she’d sprung to her feet and dashed from the room let me know one thing—she wanted me. I could see the jealousy in her eyes and hear the strain in her voice.

I wanted to go after her, but I figured her mother would be the one to do it. If I went after her, it would raise too much suspicion. No, I’d have to wait until her mother went to bed.

After the movie, her mother wanted to talk. She went on and on for what seemed like hours. It wasn’t until I glanced at my watch that she looked at hers.

“Oh, crap, where did the time go?” Lucy asked. “I’d better get to bed! There’s some pillows and blankets in the linen closet, and you can sleep in the guest room next to Katherine’s. The bed hasn’t been changed in a while, but it should still be fresh.”

“Thank you, that’ll be fine,” I told her.

“If you need anything, you know where I’m at,” Lucy said. “Goodnight.”

    “Goodnight.”

After she’d gone to her room, I headed to the guest room, but I had no intention of staying there. I just needed to wait until I was relatively sure Katherine’s mother was asleep.

I sat on the edge of the bed in the guest room scrolling through Facebook on my phone until I felt sure her mother would be asleep. Then I snuck next door and tested the doorknob.

It opened freely, and I pushed her door open carefully. I shut it behind me and turned around, waiting for my eyes to adjust to the darkness. After a moment, I could make out the faint outline of her sleeping in her bed.

I approached her bedside. She was snuggled up with her pillow, curled around it in a fetal position on top of the blankets. Her blonde hair was fanned around her head like a halo. She wasn’t a Duchess—she was an angel.

“Hey, Katherine,” I whispered, leaning over her. “Are you awake?” She didn’t stir. I shook her shoulder gently. “Katherine! Wake up!”

She muttered something in her sleep, but she quickly resumed her slow, steady breathing.

I decided to take a chance. She might kill me, but what did I have to lose? I took off my jacket and shirt and laid them across a chair. Then I slipped off my boots and socks and set them in the corner of the room. I locked the door and carefully crawled onto the bed beside her, draping my arm over her waist.

I’d intended to lie there for an hour or two, just enjoying the feel of her warmth against me, but lying beside her was so comforting I ended up falling asleep.

I awakened not long after daylight began to break. I could see the sky starting to lighten slightly, the inky blackness of the night sky turning to a rich blue with streaks of orange and purple.

Something had changed. I tried to move, but I looked down to see Katherine’s arm and leg draped across me, and her head lying on my chest. The likelihood of me escaping before she could discover me in her bed was severely diminished, and now I had to wonder if she knew I was there and this was how she responded, or if she’d somehow ended up like this on accident while she slept.

Not only that, but I had a massive boner that was aching painfully, and her arm was across my abdomen just a few inches above it.

I could have stayed there forever, but if there was any chance I could get out of her room before she realized I was there, I had to take it. I carefully lifted her arm, moving it slowly off me and resting it on her side. I shifted my body, rolling her head off my chest and onto her pillow. Finally, I eased myself out from under her leg and slipped carefully off the bed.

She shifted and muttered something, and I slowly picked up my clothes and slipped from her room. Anxiety knotted in my stomach at the thought of her mother catching me creeping half-naked
