after Oprah,â Louise noted.
âNo, not anymore. Itâs the news that comes on after her. Sheâs on at four P.M. and then thereâs the five oâclock news,â Jessie said.
âNot on the same channel,â Beatrice explained. âOn that food channel.â
Louise shrugged. It was obvious that she didnât know about the food channel or any of its shows.
âYou got the Cake Lady?â Jessie asked, sounding very surprised.
Beatrice made a sort of coughing noise. She clearly didnât want to answer.
âBeatrice, thatâs incredible. The Cake Lady is going to host the winner of our little contest?â
âWhoâs the Cake Lady?â Louise wanted to know.
âWhoâs the Cake Lady?â Jessie repeated the question. âSheâs the baker to the stars. Sheâs famous! Everybodyâs heard of the Cake Lady!â
âWell, maybe everybody but me,â Louise announced. âWhy is she so famous?â
âShe does birthday cakes that have all these elaborate scenes painted in the icing. She makes some that look like animals and dolls. She does all the celebrity wedding cakes. She does one that looks like a castle that has a waterfall in it. Sheâs amazing. How on earth did you get her to agree to judge our little contest, Bea?â Jessie wanted to know. âThatâs just fantastic,â she added before Beatrice could answer. âI may just have to find a recipe myself. I would love to meet her!â
Beatrice made that coughing noise again.
âWill she come here or will the winner go to her studio?â Jessie asked.
âI just asked her to judge.â Beatrice finally spoke.
âYeah, thatâs right. How silly to think she would show the winneron her television program. But still, this is just unbelievable,â Jessie said. She shook her head and finished drinking her tea. âThink about how proud one of our women would be to know her cake was judged by the Cake Lady?â
Beatrice smiled nervously. She could feel Louiseâs eyes on her. She fidgeted with the collar of her jacket.
âYou wrote the Cake Lady?â Louise asked Beatrice.
âYep,â she replied.
âAnd you asked her to judge our little cake recipe contest?â
âI did.â
âAnd the Cake Lady agreed?â Louise was getting to the bottom of this, and fast.
âUnbelievable,â Jessie said again. âThe women are going to be thrilled.â
âAnd the Cake Lady agreed?â Louise asked again.
âThat is beautiful, Beatrice, just beautiful.â
âWell, she didnât exactly agree,â Beatrice confessed.
Louise nodded. She leaned back against the sink.
âWould you two like some pie?â Beatrice jumped up from her seat and walked over to the refrigerator. âI think we have some chocolate left over from Dickâs family reunion.â
âWeâre talking about cakes, Bea.â Louise sounded impatient.
âI donât have any cake,â Beatrice responded politely. âBut Dick says this pie is really good. I didnât have any, on account of being depressed and all.â
âBeatrice, did the famous cake woman agree to judge our contest?â
âWell, not exactly,â Beatrice answered. âBut she did agree to read my letter,â she added as if this was something important.
âAh, Bea,â Jessie said, sounding disappointed.
âI called her studio and her assistant, well, actually I think it was the assistant to the assistant, but he promised me that he would make sure that she got the letter. He was in charge of her mail.â
Louise rolled her eyes. âWhy do you think a famous baker would care about our little contest?â she asked.
âBecause she bakes cakes and our contest is for a cake recipe, a Christmas cake recipe. Itâs right up her alley!â Beatrice exclaimed.
Louise sighed. âJessie, can you
