delicious!â said Catt, tossing her festive mix of oranges, spinach, and avocado in her pork tenderloin salad. Jamal frowned. âWhat?â she asked, looking up at him.
âNothing, I just donât eat pork, thatâs allâbeef, pork, none of that stuff thatâs going to clog my heart in a few years.â
âYouâre a vegan?â
âNo, I do eat seafood, sometimes chicken. I just try to lay off the red meat.â
âI didnât know you were so health-conscious.â
âAdd that to the growing list of things you donât know about me.â
Catt bit into her salad. âI understand your wanting to protect your heart, but believe meâsome things are worth having a heart attack! This is one of them.â She took a moment to savor the taste and gestured her head toward his plate. âOf course, youâre not faring too much better over there with all of that cheese and mushroom sauce smothered across your polenta.â
She swallowed her food. âSo was it Meka?â goaded Catt.
âWas who Meka?â
âThe woman who broke your heart.â
âI thought that we werenât going to talk about that,â he reminded her while slicing his food.
âYou thought wrong.â
Jamal sighed and set down his fork and knife. âDang, youâre getting all up in my business today, arenât you?â
âYouâre the one who said that we needed to have a get-to-know-you session, so this is all a part of my getting to know you. Now, back to my question, if it wasnât Meka, then who was it that broke your heart?â
âI donât want to talk about that right now. Next question, please.â
Catt thought for a moment. âAre you happy?â
Jamal looked down at his plate. âI donât know.â
âWhy not?â
âHappiness is one of those metaphysical things. Thereâs no one answer. Am I happy right now? Yeah, for the most part, but that could change five minutes from now. Thereâs no set answer.â
âI think there is,â asserted Catt. âYouâre right; happiness can be fleeting. Joy, the kind that comes from the Lord, is always present.â
âI have yet to experience that. Then again, Iâm positive Iâve gone through some things that you have yet to experience.â
âAre you about to reveal one of your many secrets?â inquired Catt.
âI donât have secrets, I have skeletons. In fact, my skeletons have skeletons!â
âNow Iâm really intrigued.â At that moment, the waitress came over and asked if they wanted anything else. They both declined.
âAre you sure that you donât want anything else?â asked Jamal after she left.
âI do have a figure to watch. Iâve got to admit, though, a little of that chocolate hazelnut tart would hit the spot right about now.â
âWhy donât you order one? If you feel guilty about the calories, you can work it off later. Thereâs a gym inside the hotel.â
âItâs tempting, but I canât. Chocolate always goes right to one place on me,â she said, balling up her napkin.
âWhereâs that?â he asked, smiling.
âIâm sitting on it.â
He tilted his head to the side. âWell, from what Iâve seen, the chocolate has been doing its job.â
âI thought you didnât find big girls attractive.â
âI donât, and I never said that the chocolate was doing a good job.â He drew his hands up in mock defense. âIâm teasing, okay? Donât shoot me!â
âContrary to what you think, I can take a joke, Jamal.â She bit her lip. âBesides, I look in the mirror. I know I need to lose some weight.â
âI think you need to be healthy, but lose the weightâdonât lose yourself in the process.â
âBut I guess a man like you goes for the skinny-minny
