but we love them. In a million years, they’d never show up here so this is where we decided to come with Jody’s little sister.”
I was impressed at with their cunning minds. “You know, it’s actually friggin genius! You’re right. There’s no way Jody would step foot in a place like this.” The two margaritas I’d had so far were making themselves known. I pulled out a dollar bill and stuck it in my gyrating strippers g-string. He thanked me with a pelvic roll, and I smacked his ass in appreciation.
“Karen!” Lacey was pleasantly shocked with my actions. “Jody always says what a good girl you are.”
“I am, for the most part.” Turning serious for a moment, I asked the girls for ideas on what I could do while I was in San Diego. I was starting to get a little bored. “Do any of have any suggestions of what I can do with my time here when I’m not visiting with my family?” I grabbed Lacey’s hand across the table. “You know I love being with you and Addie while Jody’s at work, but hell, you have things you need to do, too. I need something to fill my time. So, any ideas?”
Kelly raised her hand. “Well, Cage—”
I laughed, knowing where she was going with her comment. “Ideas that don’t involve getting naked with a random hockey player!”
Zoe spoke up next. “You know I could use some help chaperoning a group of girls on an overnight camping trip. I volunteer with our local Big Sisters chapter.”
“Seriously? That sounds great. I miss working with my kids.”
“And if you have any afternoon hours available during the week, I have a colleague who is looking for a fill in for one of his therapists for the next two weeks. I could talk to him for you. See if you have the background he could use.”
She had no idea how much I would love that. Everyone liked getting a break from work now and then, but I was really missing my work. Filling in for someone, helping out wherever I could would be amazing. “For sure. I would love that.”
The rest of the night consisted of me listening to more smack talk about how hot Cage was for me and questions about why I didn’t just drop my panties for him. I understood their confusion, but I was a bit confused about why they didn’t understand my reasons for not taking Cage up on his very obvious offers.
When Zoe dropped me off, I invited her in and we talked some more about working with kids. She and I had a lot in common in that area. We both certainly loved what we did.
“Don’t we have the best jobs?” Zoe was munching on some pretzel crisps while we talked on the deck.
I got such a feeling of accomplishment for both myself and the children I was helping when they were able to accomplish something new that previously was too hard for them. They had to work so much harder at things that were simple for other children. Something as easy as hearing them say their own name correctly or being able to grasp that ten minutes was shorter than an hour could make my whole week. It sounded like a small thing, but it wasn’t. Not to me and not to the child. “I think we do, but I understand why others couldn’t do it. Have you ever lost a child to depression?”
“I haven’t, but remember, I haven’t been working with children for that long. I was a sports psychologist for years.”
“That’s right. That’s how you met Vlad.”
“Yup. And it wasn’t an easy courtship.” Vlad, being the Scorpions’ goalie at the time was not allowed to date the team’s doctor, but he didn’t care and pursued the hell out of her. She never broke, though. Eventually Vlad had to retire due to a bum hip and things worked out, but when Vlad’s daughter had some serious issues to work through after her mother died and being bullied at school, Zoe decided she wanted to go into the field of child psychology.
“Hockey players are stubborn. Obstinate. Headstrong. Not to mention persistent.”
Zoe laughed and gave me a pointed look. “Are you reading
