the office, disturbed by the change in Regan’s demeanor. She had gone from a proud, high-stepping pony girl to a sluggish, sad cart horse. He picked his brain, wondering what had happened. An hour later, the two women emerged. Regan was again blindfolded and robed, being led by Charlotte.
“Is everything okay?” Jay asked, noticing the protective embrace the older woman offered Regan.
“Things will be fine. She had some thoughts to work out, that’s all. Some decisions to make,” Charlotte reassured him. She turned to Regan, kissing her cheek. “You have my number. If you decided you want to continue training, I want you to call me. I would take you into my herd without a question.”
“Thank you, Mistress Charlotte. For… for everything.”
Charlotte beckoned to Jay. “Jay? A quick word, if you please?” As soon as they stepped out of Regan’s hearing, Charlotte slapped him hard against the back of the head. “You crushed her, you idiot! When you said you were taking her home.”
“Did she tell you about how we met?” Jay asked quietly, rubbing his offended spot.
“That’s another thing! You’ve always been a bit of a rebel, but abduction ? That is just plain stupid ! And if you weren’t my little brother, I would kick your ass! She is perfect for you, and I swear that I will skin you alive if you let this one go.”
“She has to come to me on her own accord, Charlotte. If she wants me, she has to find me. It is important for her to be able to seek out something she wants after depriving herself for so long.”
“Shit, Jayson, finding you in this world is harder than finding than a needle in a haystack. Last time you disappeared, you ended up somewhere in the Middle East. Don’t hurt this girl. She is the one, and if you don’t want her, I do!”
“It would be interesting to see if she contacts you. Just keep in touch with me. And thanks for letting me use the house.”
“If she contacts me, I expect you to have your ass here to every training day watching out for her, got it? Rest assured, if she comes, I will keep her blind-trained. That is too rare of a talent to let go. And that house is as much yours as it is mine. I’m never there anyway, so you might as well move in permanently. That is, if you think you can stay in one spot long enough to settle down, you idiot,” Charlotte grumbled with annoyance.
“I’ll make a deal with you: I’ll stay there for six months. If Regan finds me, we will stay there. If not, sell it. Without her, I don’t want the memory.”
“I should kick your ass anyway. Get out of here and don’t forget, you promised to come to dinner next Sunday. We will do some riding.”
“You know I would never miss our Sunday meal together. You feed me too well. But, I need to tell you that the only pony I want to mount is my own. I know I’m a pain in the ass, but you know me well enough to accept my reasons.”
“Yeah, yeah. Don’t think I will give you the chance to say ‘told you so’ either. I can yield a crop just as hard and heavy as you can, so don’t cross me, little brother of mine.”
“Yes, ma’am, Mistress Charlotte!” Jay laughed, offering her a pony bow by stretching his right leg straight in front of him and leaning forward to touch his forehead on his knee.
Charlotte laughed, slapping him on the back of the head again. “Get the hell out of here and go take care of your pet. You are dismissed.”
“Yes, ma’am, Mistress.” Jay grinned, scampering out of her reach before another blow landed to the back of his head.

Chapter Seven

“Master Jay?” Regan called from the back seat. “Is it true? Are you really taking me back to the cabin tonight?”
He noticed that she didn’t call it home, and the sadness in her voice ached with pain. “Yes, Regan. I promised that you would only be with me a couple of days so that I could teach you how to trust. Do you remember that?”
    “Yes, Sir.”
    “Aren’t you glad to go
