attached to Seth, too. It was hard enough battling her own feelings after all theyâd done together. She sure didnât want to answer to her motherâs and Carrieâs feelings, as well. It was too much likeâ¦
Well, it was too much like being entangled.
âSeth, have you ever been to the Devilâs Elbow?â Jenn asked, serving dessert warm from the oven. âThatâs the old part of Mystery where Carrie and I picked these blackberries in the pie. Itâs not the most magnificent view, but if you walk far enough, youâll come to the old grist mill. You can swim there, and if you bring a bucket, you can get all the blackberries you can carry home.â
âI havenât seen that part of the valley yet. Iâll have to saddle up Noir tomorrow and take a ride out there.â
âIf you need someone to show you, I know how to get there,â Carrie offered, her blond ponytail bobbing up and down in her eagerness to please their guest.
Kirsten tried damage control. âSurely, Carrie, Mr. Morgan doesnât need ourââ
âCan you ride?â he interrupted.
The ponytail bobbed again. âHazel taught me.â
âIâve got a good cob in the stable you can take. His nameâs Platâshort for Platinum. Looks just like your sisterâs horse, Sterling, only a hand or two smaller.â
âMy sister has a horse?â Carrie exclaimed, amazed.
âItâs not my horse. Mr. Morgan just meant that I can ride her, but itâs his horse.â Kirsten suddenly realized she was exhausted. Monitoring conversation was worse than mountain climbing.
âYour sisterâs free to ride Sterling any time she wants,â Seth said, accepting Jennâs second helping of pie. âAnd you feel free to come and ride Plat. Iâll tell Jim, our ranch manager, that you have special permission.â
Carrie looked at her mom, her blue eyes dancing with awe.
Being virtually fatherless, Carrie had had verylittle male attention in her life. It made Kirstenâs heart ache to see her so eager for Sethâs attention. To be made to feel this special was something the girl was not used to. And Kirsten dreaded the moment when it might end.
âWell, that was a wonderful dinner, guys, but if youâll excuse me, I think Iâm feeling a little under the weather so I guess I need to get going.â Kirsten stood.
âSo soon?â Jenn asked. âI thought you havenât been sleeping well.â
âBut what about our ride tomorrow?â Carrie added.
Kirsten didnât want to burst her sisterâs balloon, but these things, as she herself knew from personal experience, were less painful popped earlier than later.
âWeâll have to see about the riding, Carrie. Mr. Morganâs a busy man. We donât want to inconvenience him.â
âOh,â the girl said, suddenly deflated, as if realizing how foolish her enthusiasm had been.
âMiss Meadows, I want you to take me to Devilâs Elbow tomorrow and I want you to have your sister come along, also. The boss, if you pardon me, has spoken.â Sethâs words were a command.
Kirsten was silent. No one was cooperating. And there was only so much she could do to intervene if they didnât help her.
âCertainly, Mr. Morgan,â she said, hugging her enthralled sister goodbye.
âCome back again soon, wonât you, Mr. Morgan?â Jenn held out her hand. âWe donât have anything too fancy here, but when youâve lived everywhere in the world, you certainly know about hospitality.â
Seth squeezed it. âIâd be honored to be invited again. Thank you.â
They got into the Jeep, Kirsten silently fuming the entire way out of town.
âYour familyâs wonderful, Kirsten,â Seth said in the dark car.
âThank you.â She didnât know what else to say. Her family was wonderful. Which was why she
