he’d seen in the vehicle waiting on Kordell was standing on the stairs staring at him. The moment was beyond unnerving and weird. For someone who was looking at a stranger in her house and the body of her dead stepfather, she was nowhere near being shocked. She appeared to have been waiting for him. He also noticed that her hair was wet and dripping onto the pink tank top she had on. He looked her up and down. She wore a pair of panties that matched the tank top but that’s not what had his attention. All of her was wet, not just her hair but her entire body, right down to the tips of her toes. His mind was trying to sort out what he was looking at when she began to scream.
“WHY?” The girl began to shriek at the top of her lungs. “You didn’t have to kill him!”
It felt rehearsed. That was the first thought that went through Nuke’s mind. His second thought was that he better get the hell out of there.
She raced down the stairs and toward him. She lunged forward and scratched the side of his face with her perfectly manicured nails. Blood began to seep from his wound. Nuke threw her off of him. He tossed her back so hard that she hit the floor with a loud thud. “GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME!” Nuke yelled at her as he backed away.
“You didn’t have to kill him!” Her cries were shrill.
“FUCK!” Nuke grunted as the realization of the mess he was in hit him like a ton of bricks.
“Why did you kill my father?” she cried between fake sobs. “DON’T KILL ME! PLEASE DON’T KILL ME!” She got up from the floor and raced to the front door.
“You have got to be fucking kidding me,” Nuke said as he battled with disbelief. “FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!” Nuke looked down at his own blood dripping onto his leather. She’d got him good. His DNA was deeply embedded underneath her nails.
“Take it, take anything you want!” the girl yelled as she raced out and collapsed onto the front yard. “SOMEONE HELP ME! HE KILLED MY FATHER!”
“Jesus!” Nuke turned and headed out the way he came in. “I can’t be here.” He said to himself. A convicted felon, with defense wounds, at a murder scene. “I can’t fucking be here!”
The girl’s sobs grew louder as Nuke raced back to his truck. Everything that had happened since Holden had arrived replayed in his mind as the rain soaked his clothing. ‘I don’t know how that man is still breathing’ Medic had said. ‘The bullet passed right through him, missing all of his vital organs.’
“SOMEONE STOP HIM! HE KILLED MY FATHER!”
‘The dogs appeared to be drugged.’
    “SHIT!” Nuke screamed.
‘I know that you deal with men like Kordell all of the time. Go to his house and reason with him!’ Holden’s words flashed in his mind.
    “FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!”
Nuke cursed. He saw a man running fast toward him just as he reached his truck. Neighbors were now standing in their manicured yards, gawking at him. Just his bad luck, a cop raced from one of the houses. He was flashing his badge and pointing a gun at him. The familiar ‘Get down on the ground!’ rang out in the night. As Nuke assumed the position, Jasmine flashed through his mind, and he had a feeling he wasn’t going to make it home tonight or any night for a while.

    ***
The rain was no more than a drizzle now. He had ignored the warning signs and his gut instincts; now everything was fucked.
He’d never gotten used to the feeling of being handcuffed. It wasn’t just the pinching feeling or the pain that radiated through his shoulders and arms as they were pinned behind him. It was the weird feeling that he got when he couldn’t move his hands and arms. It threw him off balance, sent a feeling of dread to the pit of his stomach, where it coiled there like an angry snake.
He smiled for a moment. It was for that reason that he respected Jasmine and her trust in him. He cuffed her, tied her up with rope, and bound her with many household items even. Still she could handle it. There was
