didn’t wanna scare the kids. I hired a security company to watch all of us. There’s a unit that follows me and there’s another one that will stay wherever you and the kids are. That’s who I was on the phone with. I also called and got Darla for tomorrow because I assumed you’d wanna go with me to Curtis’s party.”
Her face softened up just slightly even though I could still see the doubt in her eyes. I walked into the living room and sat on the couch, pulling the security contract out of my briefcase. I held it out in one hand and just let it hang there. She was no more than a few steps behind me and it wasn’t long before she took it from my extended hand and started reading it over. I knew her entirely too well.
â€œDamn, bae, this shit is expensive.”
Inwardly I rolled my eyes, thinking, no shit. “Our lives are worth way more than that, Ris.”
She dropped down onto the couch beside me and didn’t say a word. Not a “thank you,” “I’m sorry,” nothing.
â€œDo we really need someone watchin’ us all like this? I think you’re overreacting. Why didn’t you discuss this with me first? I feel like a prisoner bein’ followed an’ spied on without my permission.”
â€œRis, you’re lookin’ at it for the wrong reasons. It’s not personal. It’s for protection.” I couldn’t believe she was actually taking offense to having someone watch out for her. I swore when it came to this woman I could never do anything right no matter how hard I tried.
â€œSo when you say they signed confidentiality agreements, that means that they keep our shit private? They just protect us and go about they business.”
â€œThat’s exactly what it means. And what’s up with this sudden aversion you’ve taken to wearin’ your damn clothes?”
â€œHuh? Oh, um nothin’ I jus’ ain’ feel like puttin’ any on one day or the next. So I didn’t. So what time is this party we s’posed to be hittin’ up?”
Relief swept over me like a cool breeze hitting the desert sand. I leaned forward and kissed Ris’s shoulder, expecting her to pull away, but she didn’t. I rested my lips there and closed my eyes, inhaling her warm jasmine-vanilla scent that was so familiar to me. I couldn’t help myself; it had been too long and I’d been teased and toyed with too many times over the last couple of days. Something needed to take my mind off of all the drama and craziness. Ris was so petite and easy to maneuver, it was nothing for me to grab her and pull her in closer to me. For her to be walking around completely naked she was still amazingly warm and her body heat ignited me—soothing me at the same time.
You know something? Every woman has a tell. The shit works just like poker. No matter how pissed off she was or how indifferent she tried to act—her tell would give her away every single time. I licked my lips and lightly floated a warm, wet kiss from the base of her neck down all the way down to the small of her back, and instinctively she arched. That was Ris’s tell. I smiled a devilish smile. I had her.
â€œChelle, let’s go upstairs.” That small action had her voice in an almost breathless whisper. She ain’t have to tell me twice. I kicked off my heels and was off the couch before she could even stand up. We tiptoed past the kids’ room; they were playing and wouldn’t remember they were hungry for at least another hour or so. When we made it to our bedroom, Ris surprised me by pushing me up against the bedroom door and standing on her toes to kiss me. I closed my eyes, enjoying the fullness of her lips and the giving in her kiss. Ris always kissed as if she were kissing with her very soul. Her naked body pressed tightly against me, she could take my take my breath away just with the earnest genuine love and passion in
