Sachse?â
âI want him to be happy. I want him to have
in his marriage what you had in yours.â
âAnd you think Alice is the one?â
âI think it quite possible.â
âBut here we are at the end of the Season.
Iâll not rush her into a decision, nor will I seek to
influenceit. If the man wishes to take her
hand in marriage, heâll have to do all the convincing
himself. And Iâll warn you now, sheâs not easily
convinced of anything. Takes after her mother in that
regard.â
âIt seems the only solution is to allow the
earl and your daughter to have more time together. Perhaps
youâll consider joining us at Sachse Hall for a
while.â
He angled his head thoughtfully. âI will
consider it. But tell me true. Is he the only one you seek to make
a match for?â
She gave him her warmest smile. âNot
entirely, no.â
His deep laugher rumbled through the garden.
âIt has been too long since Iâve played these
flirtatious games. Iâve nearly forgotten how.â
âExcuse me.â
Alarm fissured through her as she recognized
Archieâs voice. She quickly turned, trying to mask her
impatience. He couldnât have timed his arrival any worse if
his watch were broken. And why in the world wasnât he
flirting with Lady Alice?
âSachse,â Kingsbridge said, âcome
to make sure Iâm not taking advantage of the lovely
widow?â
âActually, Camilla was helping me to keep
track of my dance partners. I canât remember who is
next.â
âThen Iâll leave you two to figure it
out.â He took her hand, winked, and placed a kiss on her
glovedfingertips. âI shall keep your
plans in mind.â
He walked away, and she waited until he was out of
earshot to hiss, âI was making great progress.â
âThat was quite evident to
everyone.â
âWhatever do you mean by that?â
âYou looked absolutely besotted while you were dancing.â
âI did not.â
âYou did so.â
âI like him, Archie. I like him very much.
Heâs much kinder than Lucien was, and his wife adored
him.â
âI didnât think there was love among
the aristocracy.â
âThere is some.â She released a deep
sigh at this absurd conversation. âLady Sylvia Giles, Lady
Emily Cooper-Smythe, Lady Priscilla Norwood.â
âPardon?â
âYour next three dance partners. You might
wish to memorize the names.â
âIâve probably missed my opportunity to
dance with Lady Sylvia. I shall send her flowers and an apology
tomorrow.â
He sounded so beaten that her heart went out to
him. âItâs not that important. Itâs only a
dance.â
âI thought everything at these functions was
important.â
âIn a way they are, but itâs your first
Season, youâll be forgiven. Iâll see to it.â
âYou have an amazing amount of
influence.â
âNot as much as Iâd like.â
Reaching up, she straightened his cravat and patted his lapels.
âNow, weâd best get back before the duke thinks
weâre up to no good and decides you wouldnât be a good
match for his daughter.â
âIs that what you were discussing? His
daughter and me?â
âI invited them to come to Sachse
Hall.â She lifted her gaze to his. âWeâll discuss
it all later. You mustnât keep Lady Emily Cooper-Smythe
waiting.â
She tried to make light of it when the truth was
that she didnât care if he kept them all waiting. How could
she find him a suitable wife when her heart wasnât truly in
the task?
She began walking, and he fell into step beside
her.
âIâve not noticed the Duke and Duchess
of Harrington here,â he said.
âYesterday, they left on their wedding trip.
To Italy. I informed Rhys that Iâd heard warmer climes aid
with fertility.â
