    Chapter One

“Matthew,” I cooed, hovering over my boyfriend and grinning as he slept. We were supposed to be going out later in the evening, but Matt had fallen asleep on the couch after we’d fooled around. “Wake up sleepy head! I want to go out.” I had changed into my favorite dress and heels; if Matt hurried, he could get ready in time for us to grab dinner before going to our favorite bar. I gave his shoulder a shake and Matthew groaned, opening his eyes after a moment and grinning sleepily at me.

“Why don’t we just order delivery and stay in and fool around some more?” he asked, reaching out to pull me down with him. I laughed, dancing out of his reach.

“Uh-uh, you promised!” I reminded him playfully, giving him a poke to the ribs. “Come on, lover boy, get dressed and we’ll go out, and you can fool around with me all you want later.” Matthew yawned and stretched, sitting up finally.

His phone chirped, and I picked it up to hand it to him; glancing at it in mild curiosity when I saw something that demanded a longer look. When are you coming over to turn me out, sexy? Instead of handing the phone to him I stared at it for a long moment, my heart hammering in my chest. “What’s this?” I asked, looking from the phone to my boyfriend. “‘When are you coming over to turn me out, sexy?’” The message disappeared as the phone went back into hibernate mode and I pressed the home button to bring it back. The display showed the name ‘Paola’ as being the sender of the message. “Who the hell is Paola?” I extended the phone toward Matthew for him to see. I watched as the color drained from his face before coming back with a vengeance, turning his cheeks bright red. I’d never snooped on my boyfriend’s phone before, but that was all it took for me to open his text messages; Matthew didn’t keep a passcode on his phone, so there was no obstacle. He and this Paola had been texting each other for weeks; something I saw in a span of about a minute, flipping through the back-and-forth. They had been meeting a couple of times a week, and their messages to each other left no doubt as to what the meetings were for.

“Listen, Jasmine, I know what it looks like—” Matthew started. I looked up from the phone, my blood roaring in my ears as I saw red.

“I should hope you know what it looks like, because it’s pretty obvious what it is!” I shouted, anger coming over me all at once. My mind seemed to be working at lightning speed, thinking of the times that Matthew had canceled on date night, when he had said he would come over but had told me just before that he had to take care of his mom, or go into work early the next day, or made some other excuse. He had been sleeping around with this other woman—whoever she was—and I had actually felt bad for him! “Get the hell out of my house, you stupid bastard.” Matthew moved to find his shirt and I kicked at his shins. “Now! Get out!” He stood and dashed for the door and I followed him, not quite finished with what I had to say, his cell phone still in my hand.

He went through the front door, half-naked, with me hot on his heels. “Who the hell is she, Matthew? What the hell is your problem?” I said as he stopped outside of my door. I was so angry that I barely noticed that we had an audience consisting of two men looking under the hood of an expensive looking limo on the other side of the street. They both stared in my direction as I continued my rant. “You know, it’s bad enough that you’re enough of an asshole to cheat on me, but I’m insulted that you’d be so stupid as to not even take any precautions against me finding out!” I waved the phone in his face. Matthew looked so hangdog, it was infuriating.

“Jasmine, please, let me explain…” I rolled my eyes.

“No, Matthew, there is absolutely nothing to explain, and I’m pretty sure you’re not smart enough to figure
