âYouâd better pick up that camera and turn it on, or Iâll get you fired.â
âA smooth liar, too. Look how you handled the questions about the tube of ointment. You were so believable that the PAs will be in a frenzy wondering which one of them dropped it and if theyâll be in trouble for it.â
âIâm not a liar. Lying doesnât come naturally to me,â she retorted.
âI see. Unlike the Howes, who have an inborn talent for lying, youâve had to work to acquire the skill. But from your flawless impersonation of an over-twenty-one grad student to your ointment tale nine years later, itâs obvious that youâve mastered the art.â
Shannen stalked off, only to return as if she were attached to some invisible string that Ty could pull as he pleased. It was almost too true; sheâd wanted to get away from him, yet here she was, right back at his side. Making excuses as to why.
âAfter I deliberately didnât say anything about the Howes and their multitude of lies, youââ
âI understand. Howes and lyingâ¦too easy a target. Why bother?â
In spite of herself, she laughed. And quickly caught herself. âItâs not funny, Ty. You donât always have to make the first joke about your family to fend offââ
ââthe inevitable joke to be made by someone else? Itâs become a defensive habit, I guess.â
âAnd itâs not fair to keep referring toâ¦what I did nine years ago. I was young and immature back then. I shouldnât have lied about my age and all, I know that.â
âThen do you forgive me for doing the only thing I could back then, given those circumstances, Shannen?â he pressed, his dark gaze intense.
She averted her eyes. âYes, but it doesnât matter anymore. We canât go back to the past. Itâs been too long, and weâre different people now. I meant what I said last night, Tynan. We canâtââ
âCortnee said she heard you crying last night,â Ty interrupted her again. âWere you?â
âNo! And even if I was crying, it doesnât mean that it would have anything to do with you!â Shannen countered crossly. âDonât flatter yourself into thinking otherwise.â
Ty stared at her. âI just had a thought.â
She opened her mouth to speak, then shook her head. âToo easy a target. Why bother?â
They both grinned spontaneously.
Then Ty became intent. âShannen, was it you Cortnee heard crying last night? She never mentioned you by name, and she canât tell you and Lauren apart. Did she actually hear Lauren crying? Is that why youâre so upset this morning, Shannen?â
His face softened, and this time he gave in to the need to touch her. He laid his hand on her forearm, his fingers stroking lightly.
âDid you get back to camp last night, still hungry after staving off temptation, only to find Lauren crying her eyes out over Jed? Thatâs more than enough to cause a sleepless night and to make you wake up in a ferocious mood.â
âWhat?â Shannenâs voice rose to a squeak. âWhat are you talking about? Why would Lauren cry over Jed? That jerk? Please! â
âOh.â
It occurred to Shannen that he was still stroking her arm. And that she was enjoying it way too much. She swatted his hand away. âWhat do you mean âOhâ?â she demanded.
âNothing.â He shrugged. âJust âOh.ââ
âYou stand there looking totally clueless after making accusations about my sister and that narcissistic creep Jed but youââ
âI wasnât making an accusation. The production assistants all claim Lauren has a crush on Jed and that she looked devastated when Cortnee said heâd slept with those two other girls. I didnât see any devastation, so I thought Iâd missed the crush, as well.â His
