Cecelia explained. âSloane, Sep, Iâve called your parents and theyâre happy for you to stay on with us.â
âReally?â Sloane said in surprise.
âYour mother is fine with it too, Jacinta,â Cecelia added. âShe was hoping to be home from New York to meet us when we got back but a wonderful opportunity has come up for her to spend a week behind the scenes with Christian Fontaine in Paris, so sheâs flying directly there. She was worried youâd be upset.â
Jacinta shook her head. âThatâs a great scoop. Mummyâs not that keen on the cold, anyway, and sheâs so much happier now that sheâs working.â
Millie grinned at the girl.
âWhat are you looking at me like that for?â Jacinta asked.
âSometimes IÂ wonder what happened to you. Itâs like you suddenly grew up and now youâre the most understanding daughter in the world,â Millie said.
Jacinta shrugged. âIâm really proud of Mummy. Sheâs changed completely and IÂ know sheâd rather bewith me, but sometimes you have to make sacrifices if youâre going to succeed in life.â
The adults laughed.
âItâs going to be so much fun in Zermatt,â Alice-Miranda said dreamily. âI canât wait for you all to see it. IÂ think itâs even prettier than St Moritz.â
âIsnât that near where Caprice skis with her family?â Sloane asked.
Alice-Miranda nodded. âI think she said her family has a lodge in Cervinia, which is just over the border in Italy.â
âThankfully, sheâs staying home these holidays,â Millie said. âShe wouldnât stop bragging about taping some episodes for the next season of Sweet Things .â
Sloane rolled her eyes. âWhat doesnât that girl brag about?â
âSo, what does everyone think about a few more days away?â Cecelia asked. âI hope getting back a bit later than we planned isnât a problem for anyone.â
âItâs fine by us,â Pippa said cheerfully. âWe were thinking of having a weekend in the caravan but Iâm just starting to feel my ski legs and Iâd love to stay longer.â
Hamish nodded. âAbsolutely. IÂ havenât had this much fun in years.â
âWell,â Dolly began, âShilly and IÂ were just saying yesterday that weâd have loved to have time to visit Zurich and perhaps even get to Geneva too.â
âThe Large Hadron Collider isnât far from Geneva,â Alice-Miranda piped up. âI remember in the laboratory one day you told me how much youâd like to see that, Mrs Oliver.â
Dolly nodded eagerly. âI wouldnât want to bore Shilly to death with it, but perhaps IÂ could take a side trip there on my own.â
Cecelia clapped her hands together. âOh, yes, you must. What a wonderful idea.â
âWeâll miss you, of course,â Alice-Miranda chimed in.
âDear girl, youâll be so busy you wonât give us two oldies a second thought,â Shilly teased.
âThatâs not true and you know it.â Alice-Miranda slipped off her chair and wrapped her arms around the woman.
âIâm glad youâre not too big for hugs yet,â Shilly said and pecked Alice-Mirandaâs cheek.
âNever,â Alice-Miranda replied, giving Shilly another squeeze.
âWill Hugh be joining us this afternoon?â Hamish asked. He had enjoyed their skiing yesterday and waskeen to tackle a few of the more challenging runs with him.
âActually, Hughâs already gone over to Zermatt this morning,â Cecelia replied. âWeâll meet him again on Monday.â
âOh,â Hamish said, âIâm sorry he had to go.â
âYes, itâs a pity Daddy wonât get to see the racing,â Alice-Miranda said.
âIâll take loads of photographs.â Millie whipped
