again. She was terrified. And obviously didnât trust him. Or anyone.
âSo can I call Marsali?â he asked. âI need to get ahold of her before she goes out for the evening.â
She raised her chin. âDo it. But please, please donât mention Carlos Romero.â

M ARSALI W INTHROP SWEPT in wrapped in a luxurious knee-length fur coat that Claudia knew the animal rights activists would want to trash with buckets of paint. Marsali shrugged off the fur into Jackâs waiting hands.
âThank you, Jackson darling,â she purred in her musical accent when heâd placed the coat over a chair.
Claudia gaped at Marsaliâs dress, a black silk sheath that hugged every curve of her slender body, revealing only a hint of cleavage. Glittering diamonds dangled from her ears and around her neck. She looked like royalty. All she needed was a tiara.
âLouise.â Marsali kissed both of Claudiaâs cheeks, leaving behind a fragrance that likely cost as much as the wine had last night. âI hope youâre feeling better tonight, cherie .â
âNot really,â Claudia said.
Marsali turned to Jack. âI trust you intend to elevate her mood, Jackson.â
âAre you going off island tonight?â Jack asked.
âThe Kirkmans are entertaining,â Marsali said. âI understand they have a guest from Dubai.â She shrugged gracefully. âSo perhaps later an adventure to our private club on South Beach?â
âAh. Will Lloyd accompany you to the Kirkmansâ?â
âBut of course. Unfortunately, as you know, he quickly grows weary and must retire early. Is that why you asked me to come over to Villa Alma, Jack? To inquire about my plans for the evening?â
âCan you sit, Marsali? Iâd like to talk to you about something.â
âCertainly.â With a curious glance to Claudia, Marsali perched on the edge of the sofa. âIs there any wine?â she inquired.
âIâm sorry,â Claudia said. âI donât have anything except a beer left by the pool guy. Youâre welcome to that.â
âBeer?â Marsali appeared interested. âFrom Belgium?â
âMexico, I think.â
âNo, thank you, cherie. â She looked back to Jack. âNow, what is this about, Jackson?â
âAfter you met Louise last night, did you tell anyone about her?â he inquired politely.
Claudia was no judge of liars like Jack claimed to be, but Marsali definitely appeared perplexed by the question. She looked at Claudia. âIs there a problem, cherie ?â
âRemember I told you about my ex?â Claudia said.
Marsali nodded. âBut of course.â
âI came to Collins Island to hide from him, and now somehow heâs found me.â
âAnd you think I may have given you away?â Marsali sounded offended.
âNot intentionally,â Claudia said quickly. âBut maybe if you told someone about the crazy woman you met in the middle of the nightââ
âAh, cherie ,â Marsali said. âYou are not crazy. Just a betrayed woman. And, no, I did not mention our chance meeting to anyone, not even to my husband. Why would I?â
âYouâre sure,â Jack asked, staring hard at Marsali.
âYes,â Marsali said. âDid your ex beat you, cherie ? Is that why youâre hiding?â
Claudia looked away.
âAh.â Marsali rose and approached Claudia, speaking in rapid, musical words she didnât understand, most likely French. Gathering Claudia into a fierce hug, Marsali spit out, âThe bastard.â
Claudia hugged Marsali back. She hated lying to this woman, but had no choice. âYes, a bastard,â she whispered.
Marsali turned to Jack and opened her arms. âSo how can I help, Jackson?â
âJust donât mention Louise to anyone.â
âDoes this have anything to do with the stowaway the whole
