toward Nancy, holding her hand out for the note. After sheâd read it, she let out a low whistle. âThis is very serious.â
Officer Brody had also risen from the table and stood behind his partner, reading over her shoulder. Hannah was in the doorway, her arms crossed in frontof her chest and her lips pressed together in a thin line. Bess and George looked confused until Sergeant Rudinsky passed the note to them.
âIt could actually be a good thing,â Nancy said.
Everyone looked at her as if she were crazy.
âThink about it,â Nancy said. âThe thief would never have come near the house if he thought the police were still here. That means thereâs a good chance heâll come back tonight.â
âAnd with us inside the house,â Officer Brody added, âthereâs no way heâll get away this time.â
âAs long as weâre not too busy eating on the job,â Sergeant Rudinsky said, chuckling.
âDonât torture yourself,â Bess said, with a laugh. âYou were tempted by Hannahâs cooking. I donât think anyone could have resisted it.â As if to prove her point, she ate another forkful of chicken salad.
âYou know, Nancy,â George said, âI bet thereâs something else you can do to help lure the thief here tonight. I thought of it while I was reading the note. It sounds like the thief is trying to scare you. So what if you act scared?â
Bess paused, her fork in midair. âHuh?â
âMake it look as if youâre too scared to stay in the house tonight,â George explained.
âThatâs a great idea,â Nancy agreed excitedly. âWe could make a big show of leavingâHannah, my dad, and I. We could turn out the lights, drive the car a couple of blocks away, then sneak back in.â
âOh, I get it,â said Bess. âThe thief will think the Drews and the police are gone.â
Sergeant Rudinsky nodded. âIt makes sense,â she said. âWe can let you in through the back door. Unless youâd rather stay away all night, of course.â
âI never thought Iâd say this,â Hannah said slowly, âbut Iâd rather come home. Even if the thief does show up, Iâd feel safer here in the house with the police than I would anywhere else.â
âThen itâs settled,â Nancy said.
âWhatâs next, Nancy?â asked George. âDo we just wait for tonight?â
Nancy shook her head. âNo. I think itâs time we paid another visit to Kimberly Burton.â
â¢Â â¢Â â¢
âIt sure looks old,â said Bess. She was in the back seat of Georgeâs car, examining the pearl-handled knife. âDo you think it might be one of Kimberlyâs?â
âThatâs what I want to find out,â Nancy said.
âShe does have a big collection of weapons,â Bess recalled with a shiver.
Nancy had called ahead, saying she wanted to take another look at Kimberlyâs globe brooch. When the girls pulled up in front of the big stone house, Kimberly was waiting for them with the front door open.
âI knew weâd meet again,â she said.
Nancy felt uneasy as she introduced George. Again she found herself searching Kimberlyâs face for somedouble meaning. Why was Kimberly so sure theyâd be back? Was she simply confident about her jewelry, or had she set it up so the girls would have to come back?
Determined not to show her uncertainty, Nancy decided to play along with Kimberly. âIsnât it funny how certain paths seem to cross?â Nancy commented.
âLife is full of surprises,â said Kimberly, looking right into Nancyâs eyes. âDonât you think?â
âOh, I try never to be surprised,â Nancy said lightly. âI like to stay one step ahead.â
âNot this time,â Kimberly said. She motioned for the girls to follow her down the
