tow.â
âThat would be great.â Cassie started to hand Carol her keys and hesitated. The key chain was her touchstone to the future and her glorious travel plans. She removed the car keys and handed them to Carol. âI appreciate it.â
âOf course.â Carol went back into the office.
Cassie made the call to have Ruby towed, and Nate led her to the squad car. âIâll drop you at the resort and Iâll go check on your friend.â
âNate, please take me with you. Iâm worried about her. Iâve even got a key to her apartment for when I feed the cat if sheâs out of town.â Cassie jangled her keys.
âI noticed you wouldnât part with the key chain. Those charms mean a lot to you, donât they?â
âOh yeah. The cross and flower charms represent God and nature, and these three remind me Iâm going to England, Australia, and France,â she said, pointing to the respective charms. âAlthough I keep thinking I should add a charm for Switzerland, but havenât figured out what that is yet.â
Realizing she was chattering away again, she stopped and glanced at Nate. A half smile curled his lips.
âHang on, were you trying to change the subject? You were, werenât you?â she said. âNate, come on, we need to check on Becca, and the resort is half an hour in the opposite direction of her apartment. Thatâs a whole hour lost. Let me go with you.â
Nate shook his head in surrender and opened the car door. âOkay, on one condition.â
âWhat?â She shifted onto the front seat and buckled up.
âFollow my orders. I know you donât like to be told what to do, but I canât worry about you and do my job effectively, understand?â
âOf course.â
He shut the door. He was worried about her? Could it be more than just an officer of the law worrying about a witness? It felt like more, but then Cassie didnât have a lot of experience reading between the lines when it came to men.
When he got behind the wheel of the car, he reached for the radio to call in. âBase, this is Chief Walsh. Iâm heading to Becca Edwardsâs apartment at...â He glanced at Cassie.
â543 Wilshire.â
â543 Wilshire,â he said into the radio.
âCopy that, Chief.â
He pulled out of the lot and headed toward town.
âThanks,â she said.
He shot her a quick glance, then refocused on the road. âFor what?â
âListening to me again.â
âWhat... I donât understand.â
âYou respected my need to make sure my friend is okay.â
âI respect a lot of things about you, Cassie.â
âThatâs a first,â she muttered.
âMeaning what?â
âItâll sound dumb.â
âTry me.â
âI donât feel like I get a lot of respect from my family.â
âYou mean Aiden?â
âAnd my mom, and Bree. Then again, Bree isnât too bossy, but my cousin Madeline...â She shook her head.
âWhat about her?â
âNever mind.â Cassie glanced out the window, wondering why on earth she was exposing herself like this to Nate, of all people.
âIâd like to understand why youâre thanking me, so maybe I can do it again,â he said.
She snapped her gaze left and noticed a hint of a smile playing at the corner of his lips.
Frustration eased from her chest. She liked it when he smiled. She could almost feel it herself.
âYour cousin?â he prompted.
âSometimes she makes me feel, I donât know, small. Sheâs patronizing, and she teases me, and not always in a good way.â
âHave you talked to her about it?â
âNo.â
âDonât you think you should?â
âI wouldnât know what to say,â she admitted.
âFinding the right words is the toughest part.â
âDid you ever have an
