no sign of Tracie.
âSheâs not down here,â Eve said. âWe looked everywhere, Ryan.â
âI know. Letâs head for the library, honey. Maybe someone else found her.â
Theyâd only waited a few minutes when footsteps approached in the hall. Jeremy and Scott came into the library with disappointed faces. âNo luck?â
âNo,â Scott said. âWe even checked all the padlocks on the fourth-floor doors. Everythingâs locked up tight.â
âTracieâs not up there,â Jeremy said. âWeâre sure of it.â
Angela and Marc came in next.
âSheâs not on the second floor.â Marc dropped down, into a chair. âWe checked everywhere.â
âWe even checked the bathroom.â Angela sat down next to Marc.
âBut thatâs the guysâ bathroom!â Eve was surprised.
âI know,â Marc said. âBut Angela pointed out that if Tracie was on the second floor and she got sick, she might have ducked in there.â
âGood point.â Ryan smiled at Angela.
Eve fought down her sudden feeling of jealousy. This wasnât the time for petty emotions. Tracie was missing, and that should be their main concern.
No one said anything for a long moment, and then Beth and Dean came in. When Dean noticed that they were all looking at him hopefully, he shook his head. âTracieâs not on the third floor.â
âWe checked everywhere. We even looked under the beds.â Beth looked worried.
âThen sheâs got to be outside.â Eve pointed out the obvious fact. âI grabbed a couple of flashlights when we were in the kitchen. Letâs go search the grounds.â
Everyone started to leave, but Angela grabbed Eveâs hand. âWhen you and Ryan were in the kitchen, did you check the walk-in cooler?â
âNo. We were sure she wouldnât go in there.â
âI wish I could be that sure.â
Eve turned to stare at Angela. âWhat do you mean?â
âI know this sounds strange, Eve, but I keep thinking about what Tracie told me. It was more frightening than anything I could write.â
Eve was intrigued. Angela wrote some pretty scary stuff. âWhat did Tracie say?â
âShe said she wasnât sure that Cheryl was really dead, that maybe Marc made a mistake. She told me she couldnât sleep at all last night. She kept thinking about how awful it would be if Cheryl woke up.â
âWoke up?â Eve gave a little laugh. âBut thatâs impossible! I wrapped Cheryl in a blanket. I know she was dead!â
âBut Tracie didnât even look at her body. She covered her eyes, remember? And because she didnât actually look at Cheryl, she started imagining things that couldnât possibly be true.â
âI get it. Tracie thought Cheryl might be unconscious, sheâd be all alone, locked in the walk-in cooler.â Eve shivered. âThatâs scary! And itâs also crazy. But I donât think you have to worry, Angela. Tracie would never go in the walk-in cooler alone. She wouldnât have the nerve.â
âMaybe you should check, just to make sure. After all, you were in there this afternoon so it shouldnât bother you now . . . unless youâve lost your nerve and youâd rather wait for the guys?â
There was a strange look in Angelaâs eyes. Angela looked different, much more confrontational, as if she were trying to pick a fight. Sheâd never actually challenged Eve before, but it was clear she was doing it now.
Angelaâs message came through loud and clear. Eve would be a coward if she didnât check the walk-in cooler. But Eve decided to turn the tables on Angela. After all, sheâd brought up the whole thing.
âIt wonât bother me.â Eve started to grin. âBut will it bother you?â
Angela looked startled. âMe? I donât have to go in the
