to adore you.â
âReally? Because Iâm kind of nervous about it. At the time I thought it would be fine, but then I started thinking that kids arenât exactly my strong suit.â
âDonât,â her friend told her. âNo doubts allowed. Youâll be straightforward with them, and theyâll love that. Plus, if things get too quiet, show them your shoes and youâll win them over.â
âI hope youâre right.â
Taryn had never thought much about children. Her unexpected and brief pregnancy had terrified her, but before she could figure out how she was going to be a decent parent when sheâd never seen one in action, sheâd lost the baby.
âEnough about me,â she said firmly. âHow are you doing?â
âGreat. Iâm all moved in and getting to know the town. People are friendly here. I like that.â
âYou would,â Taryn told her. âI have to say the boys are better now that youâre here.â
âI live to serve,â Larissa said with a grin. Then her smile faded. âKenny is going to need surgery on his knee again. When it gets bad, I can barely touch it. I have to admit I donât get the thrill of the game. Sure, itâs wonderful while it happens, but then the guys have to deal with the consequences.â
There was plenty of pain to go around, Taryn thought. âYou know they wouldnât give up what they had for anything.â
âGlory days,â Larissa said. She glanced around, then lowered her voice. âBut donât you think itâs strange none of them are married?â
âSam was and that was a disaster.â
Larissa pressed her lips together as if trying not to laugh. âI know,â she managed. âItâs very sad.â
âStop it,â Taryn told her. âCome on. The poor guy canât cut a break when it comes to women. Oh. Speaking of Sam, have you heard anything about him and Dellina?â
Larissa shook her head. âI didnât know theyâd been together.â
âI donât think they have been. Not romantically. But thereâs something going on. You know the guys want to have that big weekend party for the clients, right?â
Larissa rolled her eyes. âOf course. Sam asked if I would help pull it together. Thereâs no way I could handle something like that. Iâm great at what I do, but an expensive party at a five-star hotel isnât really my thing.â
âNow, if it was a hamster rescue,â Taryn teased.
âGet off me about hamsters. But yes, that is sort of my point.â Larissa frowned. âDellinaâs an expert. Sam loves experts.â
âRight?â Taryn leaned toward her. âIâm telling you, thereâs some secret there. Sam isnât going to tell me, so I guess Iâll ask Dellina directly.â
âI want to know every word.â
âI will share because I sense itâs going to be delicious.â
Their server appeared with their breakfasts. Taryn had gone wild and ordered Applesauce Stuffed French Toast, what with not eating dinner the previous night. Having a man make her feel the way Angel had and then not do anything about it tended to spoil her appetite.
As she picked up her fork, she smiled at her friend. âSo, what are you rescuing this month? Obviously not hamsters.â
Larissa shook her head. âNot even close. Iâm going to be transporting some endangered reptiles.â
Taryn shuddered. âOn purpose?â
âItâs just a few trips down to a facility better able to handle them.â
âHow do all the causes find you? You must be on every mailing list in the state.â
âI like to help,â Larissa said calmly. âItâs the right thing to do.â
âItâs frequently horrifying. Reptiles? Can you stick to things with fur?â
âReptiles need love, too.â
