actually highly durable polyurethane. They make bowling balls out of this stuff. Itâll be here tomorrow.â
âThatâs, like, great,â I said.
âYes. Well, Iâd like to bury her under it. Tess. Back here. I should have asked you first.â
âAsked me what?â
âIf you were okay with that. You know, burying her ashes.â
âI never really thought about it,â I said. âI guess we have to put them somewhere. Are you allowed, though? Like isnât there a law or something, that maybe sheâs supposed to go into a, you know, cemetery?â
âI donât think so. I just feel like sheâll be closer to us this way.â
âRight.â
âYou donât think so?â
âNo, no, I do. Itâs nice, your plan.â
âGood then?â
âGood, yeah.â
âGreat.â She patted my back, and I could tell she was working hard not to lean away. âI can help you sort through those book boxes, if you want.â
âIâll finish up today.â
âOh Ben, the dog looks like heâs going to pee in the rocks. No, dog. Shoo.
Shoo.

Halley came over to help me go through my books. Jeanie was at work and more importantly Leo was in Manhattan to see his foot doctor. Chucky kept texting me to send him a picture of Halley. âI keep seeing the word
butt
in that text stream,â she said.
âYou never told me why weâre going to call the story
The Magic Box,
â I said.
âItâs like this: Tess is gonna help Bruce and Helen, but
she
needs their help too. The planet sheâs on? Itâs called Mundum Nostrum, and itâs total war there. Tess is trying to get the Nostrumians to settle their differences by, hello, learning how to talk to each other again. See what I did there, working in the speech therapy?â She patted herself on the back. âThis requires some serious magic, the kind Tess keeps in her totally gorgeous penthouse apartment back on Earth, in the top of the golden tower from Luna Park 1905, in this beautiful wooden box.â
âSo whatâs in the box?â
âOnly the greatest treasure that has ever existed.â
âAn antigravity belt that lets you fly? A wearable technology that lets you be invisible?â
âYouâre such a
boy.
Itâs
so
much more awesome thanthose.â She dropped a pile of books on top of the To Go pile.
âSeriously, youâre making me get rid of my
X-Men: First Class
?â
âLet somebody else enjoy it,â she said. âHey? You nervous?â
âAbout what?â
âMonday.â She lit up that dingy basement with the biggest lopsided smile. Monday was our first Read to Rufus session with the little kids. âFlip, Flip, Flip, Flip, Flip!â She picked him up and spun around with him.
âChamp, that you down there?â Leo said. He limped into the basement.
âHi, Iâm Halley.â
âHi. Yeah, I thought that voice was a little high for Ben,â Leo said. He stared a little too long at her pink wig.
âWell, I better get going,â she said. âGotta get home to help my dad with a show.â
âWhat kind of
show
?â Leo said
âMagic act for a birthday party.â
âAh,â Leo said.
âVery nice to meet you,â she said. Her hand was tiny in his, but she gave a good shake.
Flip and I walked her to the train. When we got back, Leo said, âTess didnât mind you hanging out with chicks like that?â
âMom would have loved her,â I said. âBesides, like what?â
âForget about the pink dye job for now, in my day girls didnât cut their hair to look like boys. Itâs like sheâs trying to be in your face about it, you know what I mean?â
âNo, I donât.â
âSheâs purposely shocking people. Sheâs drawing attention to herself.
