room.
âHe was here again?â asked Maricel. âThank God, Patrick is at a playdate.â She ran to the house phone, and Ray was in the bedroom within two minutes.
âKids outtaderoom while I take care of this guy,â said Ray, picking up CJâs bat.
âI want to stay,â said CJ.
Ray was already opening the closet the tiniest crack. He looked inside, then swung the door open the entire way. Patrick didnât own a lot of clothes, and the closet was huge, so it didnât take long to realize nobody was in there.
With his heart pounding as if he had sprinted a mile, CJ checked under the bed, but he quickly saw that Patâs twenty-seven stuffed animals took up all the space. There was no way a human could fit in there. Where did he go?
Brid and Maricel came into the room.
âAre you sureyaseeing a person?â asked Ray.
âYes,â said Brid emphatically.
âI bet itâs the same man Pat saw, and both times he went into this room,â said CJ. âLast time he left by the fire stairs, but this time he didnât leave. He came in here.â
âYeah, but what Iâm saying,â muttered Ray, âis maybe you are seeing something that isnât real, or maybe itâs real, but not dangerous.â
âLike a ghost!â hollered Maricel.
âA ghost!â shrieked Brid.
âHello?â said CJ. âDonât we all know that there isnât such a thing?â He didnât believe it was a ghost for one second.
âWellyaknow what happened?â said Ray. âMaybe there is a ghost in this apartment. Itâs been such an unhappy place.â
âWhat do you mean?â asked CJ.
Ray took a deep breath. âWell, ya know Eloise wasnât an only child.â
âI think we sort of know that,â said Brid, trying to remember exactly what Lukas Williamson had said about the family.
âNah,â said Ray, âshe had a brother, supposed to be a nice kid. But he, um, well, he disappeared for a while. I heard he was away at some boarding school.
âBy that time, his sister was already in college. They never were all together again.â Ray had a faraway look in his eyes. âHe just sorta disappeared, heard he went to college out West and then into the army; he didnât even show up when his mom passed away.â
âYou mean you were working here way back then?â
âNaw. I started in 1970. Itâs just that the guys who work here, we talk, yaknow? That night guy, Carlos, he was here back then.â
âYeah, that guy doesnât talk much.â
âYeah, good guy, but doesnât talk at all.â
CJ had crawled into the closet and was looking closely at the back wall. âLook at this. Itâs almost like this closet has a seam. You see that slight indentation?â
Glancing at the wall, Ray said, âHonestly, kid, thereâs no way to go in or out of this building without getting past me or the door guy. Iâd say that what you have here is either a ghost, or an overactive imagination. Neither of those things is going to hurt you.â
In the background, they could hear the impatient buzzing of another tenant looking for the elevator. âGotta go,â Ray said, âbut call me if you have any more problems.â
As they watched him go, CJ mumbled to Brid, âItâs time we include Eloise in this. We have too many questions and no answers.â
Brid nodded solemnly. âUh-huh. For a mystery thatâs supposed to be dead for a long time, it feels so alive.â
âI bet this guy keeps coming here because he knows we are on to something. Maybe itâs something heâs looking for, too.â
The kids looked at each other. Every day brought more questionsâand still no answers.
