greet her customer. When she heard Dr. Tuckerâs voice join her motherâs, Vanessa hesitated, then went in to meet him.
âWell, Van, getting a look at your mother at work?â
âYes.â
He had his arm around her motherâs shoulders. Lorettaâs color had risen. Heâs just kissed her, Vanessa realized, trying to analyze her feelings. âItâs a wonderful place.â
âKeeps her off the streets. Of course, Iâm going to be doing that myself from now on.â
âHam!â
âDonât tell me you havenât told the child yet.â He gave hera quick, impatient squeeze. âGood grief, Loretta, youâve had all morning.â
âTell me what?â
With these two, Ham thought, a man had to take the bull by the horns. âItâs taken me two years to wear her down, but she finally gave me a yes.â
âA yes?â Vanessa repeated.
âDonât tell me youâre as thickheaded as your mother?â He kissed the top of Lorettaâs head and grinned like a boy. âWeâre getting married.â
âOh.â Vanessa stared blankly. âOh.â
âIs that the best you can do?â he demanded. âWhy donât you say congratulations and give me a kiss?â
âCongratulations,â she said mechanically, and walked over to peck his cheek.
âI said a kiss.â He swung his free arm around her and squeezed. Vanessa found herself hugging him back.
âI hope youâll be happy,â she managed, and discovered she meant it.
âOf course I will. Iâm getting two beauties for the price of one.â
âQuite a bargain,â Vanessa said with a smile. âWhenâs the big day?â
âAs soon as I can pin her down.â It hadnât escaped him that Vanessa and Loretta hadnât exchanged a word or an embrace. âJoanieâs fixing dinner for all of us tonight,â he decided on the spot. âTo celebrate.â
âIâll be there.â
When she stepped back, he grinned wickedly. âAfter the piano lesson.â
Vanessa rolled her eyes. âNews travels fast.â
âPiano lesson?â Loretta repeated.
âAnnie Crampton, Violet Driscollâs grandniece.â He gave a hearty laugh as Vanessa wrinkled her nose. âViolet snagged Vanessa this morning.â
Loretta smiled. âWhat timeâs the lesson?â
âFour. She made me feel like I was the second-grade milk monitor again.â
âI can speak to Annieâs mother if youâd like,â Loretta said.
âNo, itâs all right. Itâs only an hour a week while Iâm here. But Iâd better get back.â This was not the time for questions and demands. âI have to put some kind of program together. Thank you again for the box.â
âBut I havenât wrapped it.â
âItâs all right. Iâll see you at Joanieâs, Dr. Tucker.â
âMaybe you could call me Ham now. Weâre family.â
âYes. Yes, I guess we are.â It was less effort than she had expected to kiss her motherâs cheek. âYouâre a very lucky woman.â
âI know.â Lorettaâs fingers dug into Hamâs.
When the bells jingled behind Vanessa, Ham took out a handkerchief.
âIâm sorry,â Loretta said as she sniffled into it.
âYouâre entitled to shed a few. I told you sheâd come around.â
âShe has every reason to hate me.â
âYouâre too hard on yourself, Loretta, and I wonât have it.â
She merely shook her head as she balled the handkerchief in her hand. âOh, the choices we make in this life, Ham. And the mistakes. Iâd give anything in the world to have another chance with her.â
âTimeâs all you need to give.â He tilted her chin up and kissed her. âJust give her time.â
