den that I asked you to bring me?â
Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled outa small envelope. âSure did. Looks like tickets to the Opera Center.â He handed it to her. âWhat are you planning to see there?â
Phoebe took the envelope and peeked inside, smiling. â Madame Butterfly. The tickets are for next Monday.â
Daniel grimaced. âYou wonât be out of here yet, Iâm afraid. At least, from what the doctor told me this morning.â
She nodded happily. âI know that. Iâm going to have to miss it. But you two will go in my place. Wonât you?â
âWhat?â they both cried in unison.
âItâs the perfect solution.â She beamed at them. âI canât stand to think of my two seats sitting empty during the performance. But if you two goâ¦â
âI canât go,â Daniel said quickly.
Phoebeâs smile dimmed. âWhy not?â Her challenge was sharp.
âIâm going to be busy.â
âDoing what?â
âGram!â
She grabbed his hand and squeezed very hard, reaching out and taking Abbyâs hand again as well.
âPlease go,â she said, her face anxious. âAs a favor to me.â
His jaw tightened. She looked so small and vulnerable. He glanced sideways at Abby. She was staring at him, her eyes wide.
âDo you want to go?â he asked gruffly.
âIâve never been to the opera,â she said.
He gave her a half smile of surrender. âThen I guess itâs time you went,â he said.
Phoebe sighed happily and fell back against her pillows. âYou donât have to stay for the whole thing,â she said, suddenly visibly weakening. âIf you hate it, you can leave at intermission.â
Daniel leaned down and kissed her forehead. âWe wonât hate it,â he promised her, taking the tickets. âThanks, Gram. Now you get some rest.â
Abby thanked her, too, and they started to leave the room together.
âDaniel!â
He turned back to see what she wanted. She motioned for him to lean close and spoke softly.
âYou come back when you can. Alone.â She grinned at him mischievously. âIâve got something for you.â
âWhat?â
âOn the case, I mean.â She winked at him significantly.
âOh, that.â
âYes, that. Come back this afternoon and Iâll tell you everything.â
He smiled at her indulgently. âOkay, Gram. You take a nap in the meantime.â
âIâll try to,â she said, her voice trailing after him as he made his way out. âBut theyâll be bringing in a tray and forcing me to eat something soon.â
He waved from the doorway, then found, to his surprise, that Abby was waiting for him in the hall.
âIs anything wrong?â she asked, looking a bit anxious.
âNo. She just wanted to tell me something.â He studied her face, touched by her concern. âThanks for being so nice to her,â he added gruffly.
Her smile lit the area. âOh, thatâs no trouble at all. Sheâs a peach.â
âShe is that,â he agreed. It was nice to meet a woman who was concerned about other people as much as she was about anything. Niceâand unusual. Still, he had certain concerns himself.
âBut listen,â he added, frowning slightly, âdonât encourage her about the cruise thing, okay? Itâs impossible. She canât go. I donât want to see her getting her hopes up.â
âReally?â Abby looked as though it mattered to her that Phoebe would be disappointed. âThatâs a shame. She is so looking forward to it.â
He shook his head. He wasnât going into it any further, but he wanted her to know there was no use pursuing it. âCanât be done,â he said shortly.
Then he hesitated. The next step would be to ask if she was busy for lunch, wouldnât it? After all, if
