holstered the weapon.
Chance had a bandana pressed to his chin.
âWhoâs gonna question him?â he asked Clint.
âI will,â Clint said. âYouâre bleeding too much.â
âYou told me I wasnât bleeding that bad!â
âI lied. I guess you might be younger and quicker, but you bruise easily. You better take care of it.â
Clint looked at the man seated on the ground.
âWhatâs your name?â
The man did not reply.
âYou want the other heel shot off?â Clint asked. He touched his gun. âMaybe this time Iâll actually hit your ankle.â
âNo,â the man said, putting his hands out to ward off a bullet. âMy nameâs Edwards, Aaron Edwards.â
âAnd what are you doing following us?â
Clint could see Edwards trying to decide what to say. He decided to help him by drawing his gun and cocking the hammer back.
âOkay, okay,â Edwards said. âIt wasnât my idea, it was Carlâs.â
âCarl who?â
âBreckens.â
Clint looked at Chance who, still holding the bandana to his wound, shook his head. From behind them they could hear Markstein, who had finally maneuvered his mount and the packhorse over to them.
âWe donât know him,â Clint said. âWho is he?â
âHeâsâ¦just a guy I ride with.â
âAnd why is he having you follow us?â
âBecause he went ahead to Beale Springs to wait.â
âWait for us?â
Edwards nodded.
âIs he alone?â
âNo, he has two other men with him,â Edwards said. âIf you want their names, youâll have to gimme a minute to think.â
âThatâs not necessary,â Clint said. âWho or what are they after?â
Edwards used his chin to point and said, âHim.â
Clint and Chance turned and looked at Markstein, who was still mounted.
âMe? Why me?â
âHe wants your mine.â
âAnd heâs willing to kill to get it?â Clint asked.
âYeahâwell, not him, so much. The guy who hired us is.â
âYou were hired to kill me?â Markstein asked.
âYes.â
âBy who?â Clint asked. âExactly who?â
âI dunno.â
âEdwardsââ
âI really donât,â the man said. âCarl does all the thinkinâ for us.â
âAnd all the negotiating,â Chance said.
âRight.â
âSo you have no idea who hired you?â
âNo,â Edwards said. âI was just goinâ along with Carl, who said weâd get paid a lot of money.â
âWhy the other two men?â Clint asked.
âOnce Carl realized we were gonna have to deal with you and him,â Edwards said, indicating Chance, âhe figured we needed some help.â
Clint turned to look at Chance and Markstein.
âAny questions?â he asked them.
âNot for him,â Markstein said, âbut I have a few for you.â
âNot in front of him,â Clint said. âTheyâll have to wait until we get on the trail again. Chance, how long would it take this fella to walk to Beale Springs.â
âWith only one heel on his boot? Heâd be lucky to get there tomorrow morninâ.â
âWhat?â Edwards said. âWalk? I canât walkââ
âWould you rather be tied up out here?â Clint asked.
âWell, noââ
âOr dead?â Chance asked.
âHell, no!â
âThen youâll walk,â Clint said. He looked at Chance. âYou up to watching this jasper while I retrieve his horse and yours?â
âSure, why not?â He looked at his bandana. âI think the bleeding stopped. Ainât so bad.â
âGood.â
Clint mounted up and caught both horses. Once Chance was mounted, he gave him the reins of Edwardsâs horse while he grabbed the pack animal again.
