up. The deejay chattered. The stuff he said was supposed to be funny. Listening, I thought: I take life too seriously. Everything changes. Hair grows back. I kept snipping and snipping. My hair was so thick. It hadnât been cut since I was little. I felt light and free. My head turned easily from side to side. Framed in the mirror I saw someone new, a solitary seed breaking through the ground.
Honey was going to kill me.
Her reaction was almost comical. She stared at my reflection in the bathroom mirror as if I were a monster from hell.
âI canât believe this! How could you do this?â She reacted just as Iâd expected. Honey is always the star of the show. The rest of us are scenery. âYouâre insane. Why didnât you just cut off your head and make everybody happy? Youâre such a freak!â
âOh, go hide in your piano.â
âI donât want to be seen with you! This is so embarrassing! You might as well wear a clown costume to school!â
âFine. Can I borrow your cheerleading outfit?â
âYouâre out of control. Youâve gone over the edge. I mean, look at you!â
âDid you hear what they said at the table tonight? Theyâre going away for two weeks!â
âSo?â
âSo look at your neck! Heâs drinking our blood! Heâs going to kill us!â
Honey laughed harshly. âKeep that up and theyâll put you away.â
âWhere did the marks come from?â
âDuhhh. Let me think. Letâs see if we can figure it out.â
âBradley did that?â
âAs if you didnât know. Youâre jealous because he loves me. Nobody loves you. Youâre such a pervert. Itâs disgusting.â
She sounded vicious. She didnât sound like Honey.
âWhoâs that?â
âWhoâs who?â
âYouâre not acting like you. Youâre acting like someone else.â
âOh, God.â She smirked. She shook her head. âYouâre as crazy as they say you are.â
âWho says Iâm crazy?â
âEverybody does! Just take a good look in the mirror!â
Richie knocked at the door.
âJust a minute, Rich.â
âThatâs okay, Iâll go downstairs.â
âRichie, wait.â I stuck my head out the door.
He came back down the hall, his eyes wide with amazement. He said, âMan, when you go, you go all the way.â
âDoes it look too awful?â
âNot exactly.â He grinned. âBut I want to be there when you show the folks. We better have an ambulance standing by.â
âThey like my hair better than me,â I said.
âTheyâll probably keep your hair and kick you out.â
âIâll be downstairs in a few minutes.â I closed the door. âHe doesnât think it looks bad,â I told Honey.
âHeâs your brother. What did you expect him to say? If you wanted to change it, you shouldâve gone to a salon. It looks like you cut it with your teeth,â Honey said.
When I came into the living room Richie was hanging around, waiting for the show to start. My mother saw me, stood up, and put her hands to her heart, like a heroine in a horror movie.
âMy God!â she cried. âWhat have you done to yourself?â
My father put down his newspaper. âJesus Christ! Have you lost you mind?â
âNo.â
âYou look like hell. I canât believe youâd do this. Are the other kids cutting their hair? Is that it? I thought you were a leader, not a follower, Carolyn.â My father was as furious as if Iâd cut off his hair. Uncle Toddy stared at me but didnât speak.
âI just felt like cutting it.â
âOh, Carolyn,â Mama sighed. âWhy would you want to make yourself look ugly?â
âI donât look ugly.â I hoped I looked hideous. I hoped they would turn away and leave me alone.
âYou
