that will give me time to collect some money to take care of us for the time being before your father will be able to do anything about it. I am not sure that he could do anything anyway once word gets out of what we did to Gordan – people will ask the right questions now, at long last – but we cannot be too careful. Brianna, you will take Sarah and James to Margaret’s inn – you can find your way back there, can’t you?”
    “Of course,” I said.
“Great. Tell her I sent you and why, and I’ll meet you there in another day or two. She knows me; there won’t be any questions, at least not ones you won’t be able to answer.”
“What of your lie to h er about marrying me?”
“It is no longer a lie, is it? Besides, Margaret knows what a vile creature Gordan is. I assure you she will understand, and she will admire you greatly for all you have done tonight.”
“Then what will we do?” Sarah asked – something I was wondering as well.
“Then we’re off to start fresh,” he said. “I’ll take care of you all, and Brianna here will take care of me.”
“Then we all ought to be safe indeed,” Sarah agreed. Though I couldn’t see her in the dark, I sensed a grin, and I responded in kind.
The rest of the story, my friend, is but gravy. To make a long story short: Margaret did take us in, and when inevitably word got out from Gordon’s home, she hid the three of us in the cellar and the searching party moved on in vain. It was nevertheless a nerve wracking couple of days to wait for Ewan’s return. But return he did, and we were off to live our lives together, and Sarah and James as well, and after some effort I was even able to reconnect with Penny. That late night on the path away from Gordan and from our miserable past, proved to be but the beginning of a lovely adventure indeed.
