generous person Ashlynn is.â
Ashlynn flashed me a (fake) smile.
âBut I donât know who my roommates are!â I said. âI wonât know where to go!â
âIâll send one of our parent chaperones to pick you up,â Mrs. Burkle said to me. âEnjoy, you two!â
âWait! Youâre leaving me alone with her?â I said, panicky. I needed witnesses! Ashlynn was totally going to torture me. I just knew it.
âI have an adult guardian with me at all times,â Ashlynn said. âBecause of my age. So youâre fine.â
âWonderful,â Burkle said.
âButââ I said.
âNo buts!â Burkle said. âPayton, I shall leave you now. Make us Geckos proud! I can only imagine what a fabulous time you two will have here in the heart of the theater!â
I could only imagine Tessa and Reilly and Sam and Nick . . . sigh. Everyone was all, Yay! Letâs go see the hotel! Letâs go see our rooms!
Except me! Because I was stuck here! With Ashlynn, and Jane, who came up to us.
âI just adore your shirt.â Ashlynn smiled at me. âTC Couture, isnât it?â
âIt is an adorable shirt,â Jane said innocently. âIt seems like something Ashlynn would wear. You two have the same taste in clothes.â
âI know, right?â Ashlynn said. âI so totally would have worn that shirt . . . last year.â
The insult went right over Janeâs head.
âAh, memories. Iâm remembering when Bertha Burkle and I first met as two young thespians,â Jane said. âOh, the glory of friendships formed over the theater. You two chitchat and get to know each other.â
She left us alone.
I took a deep breath and waited for it.
âPayton,â Ashlynn said. âPayton, Payton, Payton. What a surprise.â
âFor me, too,â I said.
âI was surprised you didnât tell all your friends that you knew me,â Ashlynn said. âYou would have gainedpopularity points for sure. Between knowing me and your shirt, you could be the coolest Dramatic Gecko today.â
âI wasnât sure you recognized me,â I said. That, and I knew she had such great potential to humiliate me, which was proven true anyway.
âI didnât,â Ashlynn said. âYouâre so much paler now. But I definitely recognized my shirt and was like, Hey! Thatâs my old shirt that I gave to . . .â
Donât say it donât say it . . .
âSummer Slave!â Ashlynn laughed.
She said it.
âIsnât this the most amazing coincidence?â Ashlynn said. âMy Summer Slave is here. And about to be my Stage Slave!â
Her what? Stage Slave? Nooo! Not in NYC! Iâd already done my time under the stage for community service. Iâd done my time!
I had to say no. I thought about what Emma used to say to me at camp.
âJust stand up for yourself,â Emma said. âJust say no to her. Sheâs manipulating you.â
âBut this is the only way I can get the coolest clothes for middle school,â I had said to Emma. âI just have todo it for a couple weeks. Then Iâll never have to do it again. Iâll never see this girl again.â
Augh! I didnât know Iâd see her again.
âHm, you could clean my dressing room!â Ashlynn said, tapping her finger on her chin. âItâs totally trashed.â
âIâm not cleaning your dressing room,â I said firmly.
âWe donât have a latrine here,â Ashlynn said. âRemember latrine duty, and we were all like, What does that mean? Ew! Cleaning the bathroom? Gross. So I got you to do it, remember?â
How could I forget? I traded for a tank top and jeans. Oh, crud, the jeans I was wearing right now. Ashlynn and I both looked down at the same moment.
âHey, youâre wearing my jeans too!â Ashlynn said.
