and went to the couch.
She crossed the room and settled in beside him. He put his arms around her. “You know what I was just thinking?” he asked.
“No, I can’t read your mind, just the minds of the dead,” she teased.
Dean laughed and gave her a squeeze. “Do you really think that Grace only told you about all of this?” he asked.
“I do. Who else would there have been. She and Donald’s family were the only ones to know. And they’re all gone now,” she reminded him.
“But I can’t believe they kept the secret all that time. I can’t believe that even the birth and death announcements claimed them as the parents of Grace’s baby,” Dean added.
“Some people will go to great lengths to hide stuff like that, especially in those days,” Katie said. “And don’t forget that these babies were born at home and what was put on the certificate had to be taken as authentic at that time.”
Dean nodded. “How times have changed,” he said.
They sat silently for a few minutes before the doorbell rang and Dean went to collect their food while Katie got plates and forks from the kitchen.
“Forks! You don’t want to use the chopsticks?” Dean teased.
“No, as a matter of fact I don’t,” Katie replied. She hated attempting to use chopsticks. It was fun trying a few times but then she just wanted to eat her food before it got cold.
They sat down and Dean opened all of the cartons and placed them on the coffee table.
Dean got up. “Forgot something,” he said. He first turned on the stereo and placed a CD in the player. Then he went to the kitchen and returned with two wine glasses filled with red liquid.
“Dean, I shouldn’t have that,” Katie said as he set the glass down in front of her.
“Oh, I know, I found some of that juice you like so well in the fridge and thought it would make an excellent substitute,” Dean replied as he sat down.
Katie smiled. “Thank you,” she said.
They ate, and listened to the music as it played in the background. They talked about the details of the wedding and when they would announce that she was pregnant.
“I think we should wait until after you’ve been to the doctor,” Dean said.
“They’re not coming for two weeks, I think we have a little time,” she replied.
Dean laughed and they started cleaning up after their supper. Dean refilled their glasses and they sat in front of the fire and cuddled.
Katie set their glasses aside and straddled Dean. She kissed him on the mouth, along his jaw and his neck.
“Gee, how do you think you got pregnant?” Dean asked trying to be serious.
“I don’t know. I’ll have to ask the doctor tomorrow,” Katie replied continuing to kiss him.
“I think she might have a problem with you not knowing,” Dean said.
“I realize that but what if I truly and honestly convince her that I haven’t had sex,” Katie replied stopping and looking into his eyes.
“I think she’d send you straight to the loony bin,” Dean answered as he kissed her neck. “We were always careful though weren’t we?” he asked.
“I think it was too little too late,” Katie replied. “Remember that first time when we surprised each other and never really had any thoughts about protection, I think that might have been when.”
“That’s kind of a nice thought though,” Dean said.
“You think so?” Katie quizzed.
“Yeah, I do. It’s kind of like an omen or something. Our love created another human being that we can love just as much,” Dean said.
Katie thought for a moment as tears filled her eyes. Those were sweet words and she really wanted to marry this man more than anything in the world.
“Why are you crying?” Dean asked.
“I don’t know. That was such a sweet thing you just said and I’m going to be overemotional for the next several months,” Katie replied.
“Oh great, better get a new package of handkerchiefs out and laundered,”
