over there fightinâ in that war, Mr. Luke?â
âI thought about it a few times, but there wasnât much I could do about it. I just had to do my job.â Luke was not entirely truthful about this but didnât want to alarm her.
âWell, I donât want you goinâ off to no more of them old wars in Spain or any of them other foreign places. You stay here and you go to work with Mr. Timothy and your daddy. Itâs high time you find you a good woman, get married, and have some chilâuns.â
âThat sounds like a good plan to me.â
Lukeâs mother came into the dining room with a smile on her face. She leaned over and kissed him. âYouâre having pie with your breakfast? Luana, I canât believe you let him get away with that.â
âI done tried to stop him, but you know how stubborn your son can get.â Luana stood up and returned to the kitchen.
âYou got a telephone call while you were asleep,â Jolie said as she handed him a slip of paper. âI wrote the name and number down.â
Luke looked at the information thoughtfully and shook his head. âWho is she?â
âMaxine Rogers? Why, sheâs a reporter for the Arkansas Gazette. Iâm surprised youâve never heard of her.â
âWhat does she want?â
âShe wants to interview you.â
âNot interested.â
âYes you are. Youâre always talking about how people are not aware of whatâs going on in Europe. Well, hereâs yourchance to let them know. Thousands of people read the Gazette, so you can speak to every one of them.â
Luke made a face. âA woman, you say? Isnât it against the Bible for women to be reporters for newspapers?â
âI donât know where you heard that, but I certainly donât think thereâs anything like that in the Bible.â
Luke laughed. âI think youâre right. Okay. Iâll call the homely old girl.â
âHow do you know sheâs homely?â Jolie demanded, interested in spite of herself.
âGood-looking girls get married and donât become reporters for the Arkansas Gazette. Iâm surprised you donât know things like that, Mother.â
âYou go call her right now.â
âYes, Mother.â Luke laughed. He stood up and gave his mother a bear hug, picking her up off the floor. âYouâre the best-looking woman Iâve ever seen. Whoever this reporter is, she wonât be as pretty as you.â
âPut me down, you fool!â Jolie protested, but actually she loved his teasing.
Luke made his way to the phone and dialed the number. At once a woman answered, saying, âMaxine Rogers.â
âMrs. Rogers, this is Luke Winslow.â
âItâs not Mrs. Just Maxine will do.â
âFine. Iâm Luke.â
âIâd like to do an interview. I want to do a story on the war.â
âWhich war?â
âWhyâin Spain.â
âThat warâs over.â
The woman laughed. She had a good voice, full of life, and sounded fairly young. âThen Iâll let you pick the war, Luke. Tell you what. If youâll join me for dinner tonight, Iâll buy.â
âAre you sure thatâs legal?â
âAm I sure whatâs legal?â
âBuying me supper. You might try to influence me by lavishing a good meal on me.â
âIt wonât be that expensive. Do you know where Leonardâs Cafeteria is?â
âHad many a meal there.â
âHow about if we meet there at seven oâclock?â
âHow will I know you?â
âIâll wear a red hat and have a notebook in my hand.â
âAll right. Leonardâs it is at seven oâclock.â
Putting the phone down, Luke walked back into the kitchen. âIâm going to miss your supper tonight, Luana. A womanâs buying me a meal at Leonardâs.â
