groaned loudly as he tried to sit up.
Six nodded. âOne or two.â He turned and pointed towards the closest Agent. âBring me a stretcher,â he ordered. âAnd make it the strongest one weâve got.â
Three hours later, Rex lay on an uncomfortable bed back at Providence headquarters. In the last one-hundred-and-eighty minutes he had been poked, prodded, jabbed, pierced, punctured, tickled, scratched and â briefly â electrocuted. It had not been his favourite morning.
âNothing,â said Dr Holiday, shrugging.
Agent Six frowned. âNothing?â
âNothing. Heâs absolutely fine.â
âDoes that mean youâll stop sticking pins in me?â Rex asked, hopefully. Six ignored him.
âThatâs good news. He can get back on duty.â
âIâm not so sure thatâs a good idea,â Holiday argued.
âWhy? You just said he was fine.â
âBecause I really didnât enjoy the pins,â Rex continued. âOr the electric shock.â
âThe tests say heâs fine,â Dr Holiday nodded, âbut we both know he
isnât
fine.â
âWasnât really a fan of any of it, actually,â added Rex.
âWe both saw what happened,â Holiday continued. She looked into Sixâs eyes, but all she saw was her reflection in his mirrored sunglasses. âSomething was seriously wrong.â
â
Was
seriously wrong,â Six said. âPast tense. You just said it yourself, heâs testing normal now.â
âIâd like to do some more tests,â Holiday told him. âCentral nervous system, higher brain function â¦â
In one single bound, Rex leapt up from the bed. He stood beside them, back straight, trying to look as fit and healthy as possible. âTests?â he asked. âNo tests. Tests done. Iâm fine, look.â
He stepped back and quickly cycled through his transformations. The Punk Buster feet appeared, only to vanish again a moment later. With a twitch of his shoulders, he brought out the Boogie Pack.
âHuh?â he grinned, turning left and right to show the jetpack off. âLooking good, right?â
There was another metallic
whirr
and the jetpack disappeared. Raising his arms, Rex produced his Smackhands. He gave Six and Holiday a mechanicalthumbs-up and flashed them a hopeful smile. âSee? Good as new. No more tests needed. Especially not ones that involve sticking pins in my face.â
Six stared at him, impassively. Eventually, he turned to Dr Holiday. âWhat do you think?â
âYou know what I think,â she replied.
âWeâll keep an eye on him,â Six said. âFirst sign of malfunction and I pull him back in, but for now heâs back on duty.â
âAll
right
!â Rex cheered, and then he jumped as the piercing scream of an alarm echoed around Providence HQ.
CHAPTER 3
R EX AND A GENT S IX stood by the open back door of a Providence aircraft as it swooped low over a city.
âSan Jose, California,â Six said. âTenth largest city in the United States. Population one million.â
Rex pointed. âOne million and one, if you count that guy twice.â
Below them, a two-headed Evo was stomping along a deserted street, tearing through cars with its long, clawed fingers. Both heads looked up at the sound of the aircraftâs engine.
âEvasive action!â Six bellowed, as the Evo tore a street light from the concrete and hurled it like a javelin towards them. The boat-like aircraft banked sharply left and the metal pole soared harmlessly by.
But the sudden sideways movement sent Rex stumbling through the open door. âGreat,â he muttered, as he plunged towards the ground. âJust great.â
The wind whistled around Rex, whipping at himas he fell. Down below, the two-headed Evo bared twin sets of pointed teeth and let out a roar.
