door.
“You aren’t going to help me upstairs?” he pouted.
“Nope. For all I care you can fall asleep on the porch.”
“That’s cold, even for you baby,” he said as he placed his feet on the Nevada earth .
Kate gave him a shove on the back and Jack stood . He turned to look at her leaning his hands against the door. “I’ll see you soon.” He stepped back and closed the door.
Kate didn’t wait for Jack to get in the house, she pulled away and traveled down the dirt road to her place . She parked the car and entered the carriage house.
She threw her keys on the coffee table and walked upstairs then kicked off her flip flops and slid out of her jeans ready to fall back in bed.
Suddenly she heard a loud bang downstairs and a male voice spewing obscenities . Kate rolled her eyes and climbed partway down the stairs. She stopped seeing a shirtless Jack with pants around his ankles struggling to take off his boots.
“What are you doing?” she gasped as she sunk low on the stairs realizing she had no pants on herself.
“I’m coming to bed with you.” He fell back on the couch, removed his boots and jeans, and then stood wearing only his boxer briefs.
“Jack, you have to leave,” said Kate rather loudly as she gazed at his manly form . Oh God, he was good looking and her breath caught in her chest. Jack took the steps two at a time, passing her and taking her hand along the way.
“I’m not taking no for an answer,” he said as he pulled her up the stairs.
Before she could object he lifted her off her feet and tossed her in the middle of her bed . Jack dove on top of her and pinned her beneath him.
“God, you smell good baby,” he said as he breathed in the sweet perfume of her hair.
She wished she could say the same about him as he reeked of whisky and beer. “Jack, get off of me,” cried Kate as his dead weight pressed her into the mattress.
“Sh hh,” he whispered as he buried his head in her neck. “Just lay still and let me feel you.”
“Oh God, I knew I should have never gone to pick you up,” she spat . “Jack, we can’t do this. You’re drunk.” She heard the soft purrs of Jack’s breath. “Jack,” Kate said again but he didn’t answer. “Jack!”  Slow light snore sounds escaped from his lips and she realized he passed out. “Great,” she gave an exasperated sigh. “What the hell am I going to do with you now?”
It took several minutes for her to roll him on his side . When she did, his arm slipped around her waist and he spooned her close to him.
Kate laid her head on the pillow too tired to fight . Besides, a warm feeling began to grow inside her, and it felt so nice just to be held. It had been over a year since she felt any intimate contact, and she found herself soaking up his comfort like a battery that needed to be charged. What could it hurt to lie this way for a little while with his warm body nestled against hers and his arms draping her in like a sheltering cloak? But then Jack’s hand move up her belly and settled around her breast, holding one gently in his palm while he slept.
She gasped back the sob in her throat while t ears formed in her eyes, feeling this mock of intimacy and wishing it to be real. An ache filled her heart and the despair of loneliness engulfed her.
Her shoulders began to involuntary shake, the only sign of her brokenness as she silently wept. “Shhh baby, don’t cry,” he whispered in a state of slumber soft to her ear.
Oh God , she blinked as a salty tear streaked down her cheek, her humiliation worsening by his discovery, and the need to flee, gripping her almost to incapacitation.
She couldn’t bear it anymore . She lifted his hand from her and sat up trying to slip away but instinctively Jack reached out and caught her by her own hand.
“Please Kate, don’t go,” he whispered twisting his torso and leaning his head on the smooth of her back. “I want to hold you. Please just let me hold you.”
    His breath was
