attention.
âQuit? What! Never!â Lila couldnât even conceive of the idea of quitting True Housewives of Sweet Valley . She was the showâs starring bitch and she happened to be good at it. Lila hadnât done anything with her life so far except drop out of college, marry Ken, and spend her days dumping piles of money on Rodeo Drive. True Housewives was the closest that Lila had ever come to a lifeâs calling. She had great instincts for camera angles and drama, and her perfect little body looked fantastic on camera. If she gave that up, then who would she be? An NFL starâs wife. That was bad enough. Now she would be his ex-wife. You canât be more nobody than that.
âIâm just saying, maybe that would help soften things with Ken,â Jessica said, her attention again on her phoneâs lighted screen.
âAre you asking me to give something up ?â Lila asked. âUm, excuse me, have we met?â She threw open her arms, which were heavy with diamonds and platinum. âWhen was the last time I had to cut back on anything ?â
Jessica had to laugh. The thing about Lila was, she might be spoiled, but she was the first to admit it. You could say a lot of things about Lila, but that she was boring certainly isnât one of them, Jessica thought. âSorry, I forgot.â
Lila pushed her dark hair from her forehead.
âAnd anyway, Iâm not going to quit. Besides, thereâs a problem: the producers want him on next weekâs show.â
âYou really think heâs going to do that?â Jessicaâs phone dinged again, drawing her attention.
âHe has to,â Lila said. âThey said get him on the show orâ¦else. I donât know what the âelseâ is, and I donât want to find out, either. If I could just get him to talk to me, just once, I know I could straighten this out.â
Jessica shook her head in sympathy and was about to speak when her phone vibrated again.
âHe has to come on the show,â Lila continued. Of course, technically, he hadnât signed any sell-your-soul reality show contracts.
âUm-hm,â Jessica mumbled, eyes cast down on her phone, hardly listening, as she tapped out a response.
âJessica, would you stop with the messaging already!â Lila grabbed the phone out of Jessicaâs hand. âScrew Bruce!â
âHey!â Jessica lunged for her phone but missed.
âI have your attention now,â Lila declared as she held the phone aloft. âNo sudden moves or I will smash this thing.â
âNo, no!â Jessica cried, hands up in surrender as she eyed her iPhone nervously. âLook, Lila, Iâm sorry. Itâs just you guys have been separated before. Itâs not like itâs never happened before.â
âItâs never happened this way before.â Lila waved the phone.
âOkay, Iâm sorry. Iâll listen. I know what itâs like to have your husband leave.â Jessicaâs voice sounded full of sympathy now that Lila had a hostageâher iPhone. âTrust me, I know.â
Lila hesitated. It was true that Jessica knew what it was like since Todd had moved out. Never before had Jessica lost something so dear that she hadnât intended to lose.
âAt least Ken hasnât slept with a cheap plagiaristic criminal,â Jessica said bitterly. Well, Lila had successfully gotten her to change the subject of conversation away from Bruce Patman. Unfortunately, not entirely in the direction Lila would have liked.
âYou mean Sarah Miller?â Lila asked. Jessicaâs phone was heavy in her hand. She stopped dangling it over the edge of the couch.
âYou know?â
âCaroline Pearce, remember? Everyone knows.â Lila shrugged. Even though Ken wasnât speaking to her, Lila was totally sure he hadnât slept with anyone else, certainly not her main Housewife competition, Ashley
