wondering if heâd crossed some social line, and the old man grinned, exposing toothless gums.
âDonât worry. Me donât like shaking hands. Not taboo. Just donât like.â Rubo asked, âYou sit?â motioning to a log that ran along one of the thatched walls, thankfully in the shade.
âThank you.â
They took seats, the old manâs watchful gaze roving from Samâs shoes to his hair.
âWhat you want?â Rubo asked again, his voice quiet.
âI want to talk about the old days. Old stories. Orwen said you know more than anyone.â
Rubo nodded. âCould be. Lot of stories.â
âIâm interested in any about a curse. Or a lost city.â
The old manâs eyes narrowed. âLost city? Curse?â
Sam nodded. âAbout a bay on the other side of the island thatâs cursed. Bad luck.â
âWhy you ask âbout city?â
âI heard from someone whoâs exploring the island that there are ruins underwater.â
Rubo looked off into the distance, watching the riverâs brown water surge past. When he returned his attention to Sam, his face was stony.
âThere is story. Old. King who tempt gods. No good, tempt gods. He build temples in bay. But big wave destroy. Curse bay. No good go there.â
âWhen did this happen?â
The old man shrugged his bony shoulders. âLong time back. Before white man come.â
Sam waited for him to continue, but for a storyteller Rubo was short on details. After a half minute of silence, Sam tried a smile. âThatâs it?â
Rubo nodded, then held out a gnarled finger, pointing at the car. âWho that?â
âOh, sorry. My wife.â Sam waved to Remi and motioned for her to come over. She stepped down from the vehicle and approached.
Ruboâs vision seemed to improve and his eyes stayed locked on Remi as she neared before looking away at the last second.
âRemi? This is Rubo. He was just telling me about a legend. A king who built temples in a bay that the sea then reclaimed. Angry gods.â
âNice to meet you,â Remi said, beaming a smile at the old man. He stood unsteadily and took her proffered hand and shook it. Sam didnât say anything. Apparently, there were exceptions to every rule.
âSit,â Rubo invited, and she offered him another smile. She took a seat next to Sam and waited expectantly. Sam cleared his throat.
âSounds like our ruins, doesnât it?â
âYes. Itâs amazing that Rubo knows the story.â
The corners of Ruboâs lips tugged upward. âI know many. Stories.â
âIâm sure you do. And your English is very good. How did you learn to speak so well?â
âBig war. I help Uncle Sam.â
âDid you really? Those must have been rough days,â Remi said.
Rubo nodded. âBad days. Many die. Hate Japanese.â
âThey were bad to the islanders?â
âSome. One very bad. Colonel.â
âWhat did he do?â Sam asked.
âBad things. Kill many of us. And do tests. Secret.â
Remi edged closer. âWhat? What kind of tests?â
Rubo looked away. âMed.â
âMed? You mean âmedicalâ?â
He nodded. âYes. With white man. But not American.â
Sam stared at Remi. âJapanese experimenting on locals with white men. Want to take two guesses what nationality they were?â
They turned their attention back to Rubo. âWhy havenât we heard anything about this before?â
He shrugged. âDunno. Maybe nobody care?â
âJapanese engaging in war crimes here? I canât believe that would be swept under the rug.â
Rubo gave her a blank look. âRug?â
âSorry. An expression.â
âBack to the king and his temples. Can you tell us the whole story?â encouraged Sam.
Rubo shrugged. âOld. Not much to tell. King build temples and palace. Gods
