healer,â said Zorrin, picking up a bright yellow biscuit. âCan fix almost anything. Only death is beyond her. Youâll be safe while sheâs around, other than if her cooking poisons you.â
Flick aimed a blow at Zorrinâs head, which he ducked. âIâve saved him from the verge of death several times. Now I wonder why I bothered. Iâll take you round the ingredient garden sometime. But touch nothing or⦠â Flick grasped her neck, rolling her eyes up to the ceiling.
âYouâre on,â said Skoodle.
âInterested by something thatâs not food? Thatâs odd,â hissed Ikara.
Keeko grabbed a bunch of grapes and started tossing them in the air, catching them in her mouth.
âCome on, the rest of you. Eat. Iâll be offended if you donât clear the table,â said Flick.
âLove a challenge,â said Alex, reaching for a blueberry muffin.
âTell Flick your story. Also, I want to know how you found me,â said Zorrin, pouring juice for everyone.
Interrupting each other often the four related their tale, starting from Alexâs email and his decision to find out what had happened to his parents. Keekoâs eyes filled with tears as they got to the river battle.
âThen Tariq disappeared over the waterfall, still wrestling with the crocodile,â said Ikara in a strange, brittle voice.
Alexâs chest felt heavy and strange. âTariq warned us that the fall would be fatal.â
âMaybe he was wrong. Iâll check if heâs OK on the crystal.â Flick vanished, leaving behind a faint waft of perfume.
âWhere did she go?â asked Skoodle.
âDisparticulated. Dematerialised to become solid somewhere else. Sort of instant transport.â
âAmazing,â said Keeko. âWhich crystal?â
âAn entire wall in Flickâs bedroom, which shows where anyone is. Only the more powerful of the evil ones donât show up, nor does anyone whoâs in their power. So, alive orâ â Zorrin stopped and coughed, â⦠otherwise, sheâll find him.â
They heard Flickâs voice even before she reparticulated. âIâve found Tariq. Heâs alive.â A hazy shadow appeared and began to turn into the solid body of Flick.
âFantastic,â shouted Keeko, cartwheeling across the kitchen.
âAliveâs good, but is he OK?â asked Ikara.
âSeems so. Heâs making his way through the jungle towards us.â
âThis news is ice,â said Alex, punching the air.
Zorrin frowned slightly. âPardon? I thought you said âIceâ.â
âI did. It means fantastic. You know: if cool is very good, then ice is the best it can get.â
There was a strangled sound behind them as Flick choked on her coffee then started laughing.
âOrdinary words donât need new meanings,â said Zorrin. âIce is frozen water. Thatâs all. There are many other words for the best â like superb, overwhelming, fantastic.â
âOr make up your own,â said Flick, grinning. âLike squasjig, galumphen or rapti.â
Zorrin looked at his sister sternly. âDonât you start. This conversation is getting beyond ridiculous.â He rose swiftly to his feet, brushing yellow biscuit crumbs off his trousers. âWould you send Viskar on a carpet to get Tariq? While we wait for him Iâll show the others round Ravenscraig, starting in the gloomy bits.â
âOf course.â Flick took a sheet of thick cream paper from beside a copper cauldron and wrote in lavender ink:
Please collect Tariq. Large golden bear. For whereabouts see crystal.
She picked up a small silver bell, shook it and put it down on the note.
âNo sound?â asked Alex.
âNo need. You go on. Iâve got to pop out to the garden for a minute.â
They arrived back up from the cellar to find a massive golden snail â
