Vanessa pushed me. âRyanâs actually a nice guy. He apologized for everything and was really open to change once we got started.â
He smirked at her, but the way he did it was almost smooth. Not his normal jerky sneer. âIhave to admit, you were right about the eyebrows.â He reached up and groomed one with the tip of his finger. âWell, done, V.â
I cocked my head to one side.
They were on a nickname basis?
Vanessa beamed and bounced on the balls of her feet. âShow Tim the etiquette stuff I taught you.â
Ryan leaned forward and extended his hand to me with an easy smile. âRyan Durstwich. Thrilled to meet you.â
âUh . . .â I shook his hand. âYou, too.â
âThatâs an impressive grip youâve got. Reminds me of this wrestler I sawââ
âNope.â Vanessa cut him off. â Wrestlers are not in a gentlemanâs vocabulary.â
Ryan cleared his throat and tried again. âSo what do you do for fun around here?â
Now Iâd get him.
âI dance,â I said, gesturing to my clothes.âWearing this. Pretty funny, right?â I even spun so my fustanella fanned out.
I expected Ryan to snicker or say something snide, but instead he applauded. âThatâs amazing! I wish I had that kind of talent.â He clapped me on the shoulder. âGreat to meet you.â
He looked to V for approval. âHow was that? Am I a classy guy or what?â
Never mind that I was the one who taught him all of it.
âClose,â she said with a grin. âBut you never bothered to get Timâs name.â
âOh man!â Ryan smacked himself on the forehead and chuckled. âIâm such a goofball.â
Vanessa laughed too. âIâll be right back. After sitting in a closet for an hour, I really have to pee!â
She hurried away, and Ryan turned to study his reflection in the studio window. âMan, I look good.â
âYou sure do,â I agreed, holding up the task list. âWith personality to match! The coolest guy in the sixth grade, Iâd say. Right?â
Ryan looked away from his reflection long enough to nod, and I punched the air triumphantly, crossing off the last item.
He turned to face me. âExcept . . .â
I froze, eyebrow raised. âYeah?â
âIâve kind of gotten used to our arrangement.â Ryan stepped away from the window. âI find it suits me. And I still keep getting hints of attitude from you.â
My eyes narrowed. âWhat are you trying to say?â
âThat weâre not finished.â Ryan bent to pick up his jeans and pulled out a folded piece of paper. âHere are your next tasks. If you donât do them, Iâll reveal your dark, embarrassing dance secret, along with a new one . . .â He steppedcloser and smiled. âThat youâre so weak, you let me blackmail you.â
âYou . . .â Words failed me, and I stared at him, openmouthed. Ryan slipped the paper into my vest pocket and patted me on the cheek.
âDonât just stand there, Antonides. Youâve got work to do.â
CHAPTER
7
The Truth About Tim
âY ou canât do that!â I exploded. âWe had a deal.â
Ryan studied his nails, unconcerned. âAnd Iâm changing it. I donât see why youâre freaking out. Have you even seen the tasks?â He took the paper back from me and pointed to an item. âLook: iron my pants. I only have one pair, your pair, so thatâs an easy one.â He smiled reassuringly.
I stared at him, dumbfounded. âWhy are you torturing me? Thereâs nothing Iâve ever done to you that deserves this.â
Ryanâs smug expression slid into a scowl. âHow about every time you strut down the hall like you own the school? Or how all the girls flock around you and ignore everyone else? Or all your family members who think youâre so
