all the teasing. She allowed herself to smile. âYeah. For dinner tonight.â
âFabulous. Youâre going, of course,â Cait said.
âI donât know.â
âGod, if I werenât married, Iâd jump at the chance. Actually, I think Iâd jump him.â
âWhatâs he like?â Angie asked, sipping her soda.
Monica related all she knew about him, sticking to the facts.
âSo heâs not married, bright, charming, and as weâve all agreed, beautiful,â Cait said, taking a bite of her sandwich. âWhatâs the hang-up?â
âI donât know. All the guys I date are work types. Just short-term flings. Nothing important. This feels different, and I donât think I want it.â
Eve adjusted her glasses, then reached for Monicaâs fries. Angie slapped her hand, so, with a grin, she withdrew her fingers. âFeels different how?â Eve asked.
âI donât know. I like things easy, light, where everyone knows that nothingâs going to get serious.â And nobodyâs going to let you down.
âItâs just a dinner, Monica,â Cait said, wiping her fingers on her napkin. âHe didnât ask to marry you.â
âI know, and it sounds silly when I say it but I donât think Iâm going to go. Too many possible problems.â
âIf thatâs the way you feel, just say no,â Eve said. âCall him up and tell him youâre not interested.â
âYeah. I guess thatâs best.â
They talked while they finished their food, the conversation often getting back to whether Monica should date Dan or not. Eventually Angie reached beneath her feet for her tote bag. âMuch as Iâm enjoying this, I think Iâd better get going.â
âRelax, Angie,â Cait said. âTony can watch the babies for a little while longer. Weâre just getting started here.â
âStarted giving Monica a hard time about Dan,â Angie said, finding her wallet and putting some money on the table. Then she sighed and rested her elbows on the table. âAnyway, I donât know how much longer Iâll be able to meet with you guys like this.â
Eve looked crestfallen. âWhy? I really enjoy these girlsâ days out.â
âMe too, but weekends are going to become really hectic once school starts.â
âSchool? How come?â Cait asked.
âTonyâs been working with his brothers all summer. Theyâre in construction and Tonyâs been earning some really good money.â
âOkay,â Cait said. âSo?â
âEither Frank or Paul has been able to pick him up so I can have the car during the day. Itâs hectic getting the babies out, but I can get most of my errands done while heâs at work. Once heâs back commuting to the Bronx, Iâll be carless all week, and there are just so many things to do that Iâll need both days to catch up.â
âHe drives to the South Bronx?â Eve said.
âThereâs no good public transportation and the neighborhoodâs not good to walk in. They have a gated parking lot for the teachers so he takes the Ford.â
âYou only have one car?â Cait seemed incredulous.
Angie slowly nodded. âYup. Iâve been angling for a used van but we just canât swing it right now. So, sadly, once Tonyâs back at work Iâll need all the weekend time I can get to do all the things I need to.â
âListen,â Cait said. âThatâs totally out of the question.â She tucked an errant strand of hair behind her ear and steepled her fingers. âIâm not willing to give up on our lunches. What do you say, ladies?â
âNot a chance,â Monica said.
âNo way,â Eve said softly, adjusting her glasses on the bridge of her nose.
Cait brightened. âI canât see why I canât drive you wherever you need to go,
