you.â
Quentin walked arm in arm with Danielle over to the table. âNo, you didnât. This house is so big, a fireworks show couldâve been going on down here and I wouldnât have heard it in my room.â
âOh, good,â Montana said. â âCause we were getting a little rowdy in here.â
âRowdy is cool. Itâs spring break, yâall are supposed to be cutting up.â Quentin motioned toward the flowers. âDid you do this too?â
Montana smiled. âThe twins and I went out and gathered flowers this morning. Theyâre from the property. You like?â
âI guess I could use some floralization. Itâs nice.â
Danielle scrunched her nose. âDaddy, floralization is not a word.â
âHe made that up on purpose, dummy,â Morgan said.
âDonât call your sister a dummy,â Montana said. âShe is very, very smart!â
Danielle stuck her tongue out at Morgan, and Morgan laughed. Quentin sat back in his seat and folded his arms across his chest. The kids seemed to really like Montana. Quentin had to give his mother credit for this whole nanny idea.
âShould we give your daddy the first French toast?â Montana asked.
Reese said, âYou should give both men some first.â
âYou are not a man,â Madison said.
Madison took the plate from Montana and sat it in front of Quentin. âEat up, Daddy. I know itâs not those nasty shakes you usually have, but itâs better!â
Quentin picked up a fork. âIâll be the judge of that.â
He took one bite and shuddered at the deliciousness of the French toast. There was a nutty flavor in addition to the cinnamon, and it was the perfect combination of crispy at the edges and soft and buttery in the middle.
âThis is really good, Montana. Thank you!â
Montana smiled, and Quentin felt butterflies in his stomach. Then he felt ridiculous for the butterflies. He was a grown man. Grown men didnât get all twisted about a pretty girl.
But the butterflies continued.
Quentin ate a few more bites and stood to his feet. He couldnât take Montana and her smiles anymore this morning. She was making him feel lame.
âYou leaving, Mr. Chambers?â
Quentin paused before answering Montanaâs question. The tone of her voice made him think she wanted him to stay.
âUm . . . yes. Iâve got some runs to make.â
âYou should stay and hang out with us,â Morgan said.
âDo you all have anything planned?â Quentin asked.
âThey want to go to the mall. Girl stuff,â Reese said. âSave yourself, Dad.â
Quentin frowned. âThe mall? How about I just give yâall a credit card?â
âThatâs whatâs up!â Madison said. âHand it over!â
Quentin said, âOkay, I was thinking you were gonna be like Mary Poppins, but youâre a chef too? What donât you do?â
âThereâs quite a bit I donât do! Iâm just putting my best foot forward. I want you guys to like me.â
âWell, we definitely like you. Keep up the good work.â Quentin wished he had a rewind button to press. He thought he sounded way too enthusiastic on that last comment.
He was rewarded with another big smile from Montana. âMaybe you can hang out with us another time, Mr. Chambers. Weâd be glad to have you.â
âOkay, yâall. Enjoy the day.â
On the way out of the kitchen Quentin ran into Estelle, who was still wearing her lounging robe. âMother, are you feeling well?â he asked. Estelle always got dressed when she woke up.
She nodded. âIâm just feeling lazy today, and I smelled breakfast cooking, so I came down. I thought it was you cooking.â
âNo, itâs Montana and the kids.â
Estelle lifted her eyebrows in surprise. âThey sound like theyâre having fun.â
