The Night Off
direct was best. “What I said before, about not being ready to let you go? That’s…still the case.”
Emily couldn’t seem to look away from Nat’s face. She seemed caught between happiness, relief, and fear. “Really?”
Backpedaling at Emily’s deer-in-headlights expression, Nat said, “If you don’t feel the same way, then I’m sorry for making things awkward. I’ve had such a wonderful time with you. I don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable.”
“No, that’s not it,” Emily blurted. “You’re not. It’s just that I’m…surprised.”
“Why?” Before Emily could offer an answer, Nat said, “We have amazing sex together. Who wouldn’t want to keep that going as long as possible?”
Emily tilted her head. “I don’t know.” She hesitated, and Nat watched her make the decision to nod. “My sister is with a friend this weekend. So I don’t have plans, either.”
“Awesome.” Ecstatic, Nat couldn’t help but gather Emily into a tight hug. “It’ll be fun. We can hang out.”
“What did you have in mind?”
She hadn’t planned that far ahead. She knew she wanted to spend more time with Emily in bed, but she also craved the chance to get to know her better. As she considered and rejected a handful of possible activities, worrying about the implications of each, a loud growl from Emily’s stomach made the decision for her. “How about we start with some food?”
Emily gave her a grateful nod. “Sounds wonderful. I should probably replenish before I expend any more energy. Or lose more fluids.”
Nat released Emily and sat up, already running through recipes in her head. “What would you like?”
“I’m easy to please. Wherever you want to go is fine with me.”
“Oh…” Inexplicable shyness swept over Nat, nearly changing her mind about cooking their meal. Except she really wanted to. “Actually, I thought we could go back to my place. If you don’t mind stopping at the grocery store on the way, I’ll cook whatever you want.”
Emily also sat, not bothering to preserve her modesty this time. “Mind? Having a sexy butch make me breakfast?” Her playful air eased Nat’s bashfulness, as did the sight of her full breasts. “As a matter of fact, I nearly picked that as my fantasy for last night.”
“Perfect, then.” Nat kissed Emily’s cheek and rolled out of bed. “Do you like crepes?”
“Will you laugh at me if I tell you I’ve never had them?”
Aghast, Nat whirled around. “Laugh? There’s nothing funny about that.”
Emily clambered out of bed, gathering her hair atop her head for a moment before letting it fall back around her shoulders. The action was girlish and unconsciously sexy, and made Nat want to tackle her back onto the mattress and kiss her all over. Only the knowledge that Emily needed food stopped her.
Adorably unaware of just how intoxicating she was, Emily gave a lopsided shrug. “My parents were always broke. We lived off Ramen noodles, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly… Now Colleen and I mostly make do with frozen meals and takeout. I know it’s not terribly healthy, but I rarely have the time or desire to cook. And Colleen is too busy being a teenager to bother.”
Nat shook her head. Emily’s diet dismayed her, but she loved the thought of cooking her some real food. “Well, I’m making you crepes. I’ve already seen how much fun it is to introduce you to new things.”
Blushing, Emily stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Nat’s neck. “Lucky for me you have so many skills.”
Nat beamed. Besides sex, cooking was the one other thing she knew she could do well. She wasn’t certain whether she was more nervous or excited about sharing that part of herself with Emily. In a way, it would leave her almost as vulnerable as allowing Emily inside her body. Cooking was akin to baring her soul, which is why she’d never been able to do it for anyone other than her best friend Bridget.
    But she wanted Emily
