thought away.
âAre you coming?â Taqqiq called.
Kallik shook her head. âWeâre going to the woods.â
âThe woods are for brown bears!â Salik called.
âAnd black bears!â added Iqaluk.
Taqqiq hurried up the shore toward Kallik. âWhat do you want to go to the woods for?â he hissed.
âWe need to find herbs,â Kallik told him.
Anxiety glittered in her brotherâs gaze. âWhite bears donât find herbs! They swim and hunt!â He glanced over his shoulder at Iqaluk and Salik, then looked back at Kallik. âStop being so different ! Please!â
âLusaâs friends were hurt in the accident,â Kallik explained. âThey need help.â
âYouâre with us now!â Taqqiq snapped. âYou have to forget about Lusa and Toklo.â
âI canât walk away from my friends!â
âYou walked away from me !â Taqqiq didnât give Kallik time to respond. Spinning around, he marched toward the others.
Kallik began to clamber up the ridge, feeling numb with sadness. Taqqiq was right. She had left her brother to follow her friends. Distracted, she slipped and bumped back down the jagged rock face. Landing heavily on her hindpaws, shebegan to scramble up again, irritated at herself for being so clumsy and at Taqqiq for making her feel guilty.
âAre you okay?â Yakone called behind her.
âIâm fine!â Kallik heaved herself up the rocks. Trees grew at the top, their trunks matted with lichen.
Yakone climbed after her. âDo you know what herbs to look for?â
She turned to face him. âDo you agree with Taqqiq?â she challenged. âDo you think I care too much about my old friends?â
Yakone calmly met her gaze. âI think you care about everyone. Itâs one of the things I love about you.â Kallik blinked as he slid past her and began sniffing at a clump of leaves sprouting between the roots of a tree. âAre these any good?â he called.
Kallik padded to his side, feeling guilty about her temper. âIâm sorry.â She didnât look at the leaves. âI shouldnât have snapped at you. Youâre the only bear on my side.â
âThere arenât any sides.â Yakone looked up. âThere are old friends and friends still to be made. Choosing one doesnât mean you must stop caring about the other. We are all facing the Longest Day together. Itâs why weâre here.â
Kallik dropped her gaze. She knew he was right, but she wasnât ready to agree.
By the time the sun was high in the clear blue sky, they both carried wads of fragrant green leaves. Following the forest around the lake, they skirted the stone tower and wove between mossy trees until they reached the lighter, leaf-strewnstretch where the black bears had made their camp.
âWhere are you going?â A black bear blocked their path.
Kallik squinted at him, the scent from the herbs stinging her eyes.
Another black bear appeared. âThis isnât your land!â
Kallik smelled fear scent; it was strong. Theyâre scared of me!
Yakone laid his leaves on the ground. âWeâve brought herbs for Lusa.â
Kallik tipped her head, hoping to look friendly.
The first bear curled his lip. âWeâll make sure she gets them.â
âKallik!â Lusaâs bark sounded through the trees. âYakone? Is that you?â She pushed her way between the two males. âYou brought herbs.â Her eyes shone, but Kallik could see she was exhausted.
She put down her leaves and stretched forward to touch Lusaâs muzzle. âAre you okay?â
âIâm fine,â Lusa told her. âThe swelling on Chulaâs leg is going down. I think itâs just a sprain and not broken.â She glanced at the herbs. âYou found big leaves! Thatâs great! I need lots. Oh, and we found Miki! Toklo
