dog room to check on a patient. âI wonder if we could teach him some tricks.â
âYeah, like riding my skateboard!â Zach said with a laugh. âWait, can rabbits walk on a leash like dogs do? Maybe Adam should expand his business to include walking rabbits, too!â
Adam had a successful pet-sitting and dog-walking business, even though he was only nine. He was a good dog trainer, too. Heâd helped Truman learn how to behave better before Ms. Tanaka adopted him.
Janey frowned. âSpeaking of Adam, where is he?â She checked her pink watch. âHe was supposed to be here ten minutesago for our meeting.â
âIâm sure heâll be here soon,â Lolli said. âSaturday is always a busy day for pet sitting. I think he said he had to walk a few dogs after lunch.â
âWell, I hope he hurries up and gets here.â Janey sounded impatient. âWe need to figure out how to find more animals to help, and the weekendâs almost half over already!â
Zach pointed at the shelterâs front door. âYour wish is our command,â he said. âHere comes Adam now.â
Adam hurried in. âSorry Iâm late,â he said breathlessly. âBut I have to tell you guys aboutââ
âWe thought youâd never get here!â Janey interrupted loudly. âI was about to start the meeting without you.â
âOkay,â Adam said. âButââ
âThis is a very important meeting, you know,â Janey went on. âNobody has contacted us since we helped that cat, Hallie, last week. Iâm sure there are lots of animals that need our help, but we canât help them if we donât know about them, right? So I was thinking, maybe we should write something on my blog asking people to look for needy animals and e-mail us, orââ
âJaney!â Adam broke in. His voice waslouder than usual. âIf youâd let me get two words in, thatâs what I want to tell you!â
Janey looked surprised at being interrupted. âHuh?â
Adam took a deep breath. âI think I found an animal that needs our help,â he said, his voice its normal volume again. âIâve noticed her a couple of times while I was out walking dogs. And today I made a special trip to see if sheâs still thereâthatâs why I was a little late.â
âReally?â Lolli said. âWhat kind of animal is it, Adam? Another dog?â
Adam shook his head. âDefinitely not a dog.â
âA cat?â Janey said. âOr maybe a rabbit?â
âI bet itâs an injured Bigfoot,â Zach joked.
Adam just shook his head again. âCome with me and Iâll show you,â he said.
A New Mission
âAre we going to my house?â Lolli joked, peering out the car window.
Dr. Goldman smiled at her in the rearview mirror. âI donât know,â she said. âAdam? Should we turn down Lolliâs road?â
âNo, keep going straight,â Adam said. âItâs about a mile farther that way.â
The Pet Rescue Club had asked Zachâs mother to drive them to see Adamâs mystery pet. Dr. Goldman had agreed, since she was finished working for the day. She was just as curious to see Adamâs mystery animal as everyone else!
Adam had directed them to a rural area right outside of town. Lolli lived nearby on a small farm with her parents, where they grew organic vegetables and kept a sheep and a couple of goats. There were lots of other farms in the area, too. Some grew crops like corn or soybeans. But Janey preferred the ones with cows, horses, or other animals grazing in the fields. There was even a llama farm! Among the farms were some regular houses with extra-large yards.
âAre we there yet?â Janey asked after another few minutes of driving.
âAlmost.â Adam pointed. âThereâturn right onto that road.â
